  1. I think Napoli will go on another nice RBI run soon. And if he stays healthy I think his numbers at the end of the year will be solid.
  2. Yeah, he seems to have cut down on his swing a bit. Finally got tired of all the mighty swishes.
  3. I know that 'closer by committee' is like a dirty word, but it seems to me that a tandem of Uehara and Tazawa could work.
  4. Agreed, but at this point it's like saying re-acquiring Papelbon would make us better than re-acquiring Jenks.
  5. I know, and it looks like you were dead right.
  6. It looks like Pap's loss of velocity and reduced K rate is catching up to him quickly. Last night he didn't get hit hard by any means. But he gave up a single, a hit by pitch and a walk, and he didn't strike anybody out.
  7. Papelbon's blown saves for 2013: June 17 #1 June 19 #2 June 22 #3 June 24 #4
  8. It's the same annual rate as guys like Haren and Edwin Jackson are getting, and Dempster is pitching much better than them. $13 million is 50% of what 'aces' are getting now. Insanely inflated as it is, it's just the current economy of baseball.
  9. I don't think Dempster looks like a mistake at this point. He's got the second-most innings on the staff and his ERA is respectable, and close to what was expected. He's doing much better than a lot of the other dumpster boys like McCarthy, Haren, Jackson and Marcum.
  10. That does have a cheeriness that is reminiscent of what they said about Bard when they sent him down 'to find consistency'.
  11. Looking back at yesterday's game, I can understand Farrell using Bailey. But I'm perplexed why he didn't use him in the 6th to face the bottom of the order instead of the 7th to face the top. (Someone pointed this out on the game thread.)
  12. That'd be great. I hope Taz can be the guy.
  13. You're right, he's not. But a really solid closer would be an awfully nice addition to this team. Our bullpen would go from good to exceptional.
  14. I'm pretty sure Taz will be given that opportunity. Probably sometime in this series.
  15. I agree that Papelbon had a bad season in 2010. But I don't think the characterization of 2009 and 2011 is fair or consistent with how other players are evaluated. The blown save in the 2009 ALDS came on the only runs he's allowed in 27 postseason innings. We got swept in 3 games in 2009 so obviously the whole team has to share the blame. The same with 2011. Papelbon only blew 3 saves that season, meanwhile the team blew a 10 game lead in September. By this reasoning, the Yankees have had issues with Rivera at closer because he blew Game 7 of the 2001 WS and Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS.
  16. For better or worse, the ship hasn't sailed quite yet. There's a pretty good chance the Phillies are willing to trade him.
  17. We already did that with our offseason signings.
  18. Hard to believe they would give Jenks $12 million for 2 years of being a 7-8th inning guy.
  19. Not magical, but higher-pressure. It's all debatable, needless to say. But I think there is actually is a body of evidence that some pitchers and some players have trouble performing for the Red Sox and the Yankees and do much better in other places. I think Melancon is an obvious example of this syndrome. With him it seems to be framed as 'anxiety issues'. Well, I think these anxiety issues probably affect a lot of players.
  20. I think Bailey makes the case that it's not an easy job to be the Red Sox closer. He had great numbers with Oakland and he got off to a good start this year. But now look at him. He's toast. It's a tough job. The choke factor is underrated.
  21. Sounds guilty as sin.
  22. Tazawa is the obvious choice. Uehara may have pitched a little better than Tazawa, but Tazawa should be more durable.
  23. But Melancon and Aceves have had success pitching in other situations. They're not bums. But they couldn't handle being the Sox closer, for whatever reason. And Bard turned down the job, which was a catastrophic decision.
  24. Who could forget Heathcliff? And Duquette traded him for Varitek and Lowe. Still unbelievable after all these years. Urbina was fun too.
  25. Some people say our closer position should be easy to fill. But Bailey is the 4th guy to bomb out in the last 1.5 seasons. Aceves, Melancon, Hanrahan and Bailey. Granted Hanrahan got injured or maybe was injured, but he didn't look good at any point.
