Personally I think they want the best of both worlds - they want to make money and they want a winning team. I don't think they're trying to create the illusion of having a contending team. That illusion quickly vanishes in the face of being 10 games under .500.
There's no way it is any fun for those guys to take the beating they have been taking so far this year.
Those are bad numbers. But looking at the history, he has gotten much better in these venues in the second half of his career or so.
In the new Yankee Stadium he has a 3.78 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 66.2 innings. And at Fenway his numbers have been quite good since 2011, in a fairly small sample.
To the average fan, and I guess in many respects that's me, the Castillo deal is a bit of a head-scratcher. It's something new. A 72.7 million investment in a guy who is now almost 28 years old and appears to be not MLB-ready either as a hitter or a fielder. Especially when they grab a guy like De Aza off the scrap heap and you find out your manager likes him considerably better than the 72.7 million guy.
Buchholz's numbers with Leon catching him are outstanding. 11 games - 74 innings - 2.80 ERA. Leon may have won a job for this alone - a David Ross caddy position.
There were other options beside trading for Hamels. We could have not traded Lackey, or signed Shields, or done both, without a huge financial outlay.
I agree that it's hindsight stuff. But I think most of us were at least a little shocked that they went into 2015 with the rotation they did.
To me there's a point that's hard to dispute. If we had one TOTR starter replacing one of our batting practice starters, we'd be at least 3 games better in the standings. 3 games would put us 4.5 games out of the Wild Card with 90 games left, and with our offense starting to produce. It would be a significant swing in our position.
Sure, but that's one month. We're not completely dead as it is. If we had Hamels or Shields or whoever, from Day One, we'd be a few games better right now, with better odds of making the playoffs.
Based on this story, Porcello started throwing the four-seamer more on his own and Farrell and Willis want him to throw it less.

I think you're right, they're not going to make any moves - unless the team plays much better over the next month. That's what they're praying for.
And if the team continues to suck as a unit, making a big move or two would probably be useless.
