  1. It sounds like the plan is Moncada to 3B, so Shaw would be moved to 1B or traded.
  2. No Red Sox player has ever performed in the postseason like Papi.
  3. I didn't see last night's game but the box score suggests that Farrell made the right moves this time around.
  4. I think I understand what the principle behind the statement is, it's all based on averages and differentials between players and win expectancy. I'm guessing that if this principle was applied to Pedro/Grady it would show that pulling Pedro for Timlin or Embree didn't greatly improve our chances. But I suspect that the formula may be disregarding situational factors like Pedro being gassed. It certainly seems to defy common sense. Kimmi has her work cut out explaining and defending this one.
  5. If it takes 50 to 200 bad decisions to cost one win, that means that a manager can't actually cost you one individual game, ever. It means Grady leaving Pedro in the game in 2003 had little impact.
  6. That's one of the most incredible things I've ever heard.
  7. I agree that managing the players and the clubhouse are more important, but I disagree with downplaying the impact of the decisions. I think the Aug. 2 game is a good example of the array of decisions the manager can be faced with. Farrell could have removed Price after 7. He could have removed him after the home run, or one more batter after that, or one more batter after that. He could have stuck with Barnes instead of going to Abad. And whether he was right or wrong, those decisions absolutely have an impact on the outcome.
  8. So this game thread mojo thing is all a crock too.
  9. That would suggest that Farrell is no different from Francona and Francona is no different from Grady Little or Butch Hobson. I think I'd take Francona.
  10. A difference of 2 games a year is actually worth a pile of money.
  11. It's probably worth mentioning that the same Seattle manager had blown a game against the Cubs only 2 days earlier, bringing Cishek in for the 9th with a 3 run lead, and leaving him in for 8 batters and 3 runs, giving up 3 hits, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Just so no one gets the impression the Seattle manager is smart either...
  12. All well and good but at least Theo and Ben have 3 rings combined...Buck hasn't even been to a World Series yet.
  13. Holt was a better choice for starting LF in April than Castillo. I don't think Holt's name was engraved in stone though.
  14. I tend to agree with Earl Weaver: 'Momentum? Momentum is the next day's starting pitcher.'
  15. I'm not really blaming last night's loss on Farrell. What's more concerning is that the team is 26-28 since June 1.
  16. That's pretty bad, but stats like this don't mean much unless you show the same number for every other team.
  17. The team is starting to look like dead meat. I wonder how close Farrell is to getting the hook.
  18. Man, this team has been treading water for a long time now. Even with old Dombro making moves, with Porcello pitching great and E-Rod making a nice comeback. Something gets better but at the same time something gets worse, in an equal and opposite reaction...
  19. Frankly all the arguments about whether the manager screwed up or not are one of the things that makes baseball so interesting. Nobody can really prove that they're right, because the alternative outcome is unknown.
  20. Well yeah, he does. But he is starting to have the look of Joe Btfsplk.
  21. Sometimes it's just s***** luck though, Slash. If Price had been less efficient last night and his pitch count was 105 after 7 he would have been out of there with a 7 inning shutout. Not all 7 inning 4 ER starts are equal.
  22. Price was only at 89 pitches after 7 innings. That's about 25 pitches away from exit time. And as 700hitter says, our bullpen is not very good. I'm surprised you would think Price shouldn't even have started the inning.
  23. When exactly was the right time to hook Price, that's the big question.
  24. This kind of sums it up for me. He waited a batter too long-and even that you had to qualify with a maybe.
