  1. Actually, Timlin and Embree were both lights out that postseason. Combined numbers: 10 IP 4 hits 0 runs 2 walks 7 K's And Timlin's total numbers vs. the Yankees for 2003, regular season and postseason: 13.1 IP 4 hits 2 runs 3 walks 12 K's
  2. It's probably the right method. After all you can't spend big money everywhere. It doesn't always work of course.
  3. Somehow an approach of 'let's just throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what happens' isn't very reassuring. Right now our 2017 bullpen has Kimbrel, Smith hopefully, Ross, Kelly hopefully, Barnes and God knows what else.
  4. Andrew Miller is proving to be an exception thus far. The guy has been phenomenal for the Yankees and now the Guardians.
  5. That sucks.
  6. The Grady Little situation was about him ignoring clear-cut instructions to remove Pedro at 105 pitches, this was based on data presented to him by Theo. Little ignored the edict and Pedro gave up 3 runs. Hypothetically, Grady's decision cost 4 runs, and we would have won 5-2 instead of losing 6-5. (There's some uncertainty in there.) The decision probably cost him his job. So it was one of the all-time costly decisions, hypothetically.
  7. It can never be done?
  8. Well, I guess we won't get our preview tonight. General Farrell will stick to protocol (again) and make him sweat for a day or so. Dumbest psychological move he could make! Where does he get these golden rules, anyway? A day to settle in. Seemed to work OK with Benintendi.
  9. That calls for a fact check! Rays vs. Toronto 7-6 NYY 6-6 Sox 7-9 Balt 3-9
  10. I'm not sure how deliberately giving inaccurate medical info to the fans gets them anywhere.
  11. I wouldn't trade our last 15 years for anybody's.
  12. I have to agree. 9 years out of 10 in last place just doesn't work. This year has been fun, even though our chances of winning it all probably aren't great. I hasten to add that my attitude is different now because we've won it 3 times. Back before 2004 I probably would have taken the 9 last place finishes for a ring.
  13. Bullpens are huge, there's no question about it, and a really good one minimizes the number of mistakes a manager can possibly make.
  14. I'm of the belief that being a major league manager is a very demanding job, even moreso in Boston. In fact being manager of the Red Sox might entail the most verbal and psychological abuse of any managing job in sports. All you have to do is look at what Francona (or Francoma) went through, despite winning 2 titles in 8 years.
  15. The comment by Herzog about bullpens making all the difference is one of those colorful statements that's got a lot of truth in it, but no, it's not the whole truth.
  16. Mildly traumatized by the mental image this post inspires.
  17. I can't agree. Managers do make blunders sometimes, because they're human, and their judgment can get clouded, especially in high pressure situations. Red Sox fans saw it in 2003 with Grady. Then in 2004 Sox fans benefited from a horrible error by Torre in Game 5 when, needing 6 outs to wrap up the series, he brought in Tom Gordon (who he had burned out from overuse) instead of Rivera-because he didn't want Rivera to throw a ton of pitches for the second game in a row. After Gordon gave up a home run and put 2 more runners on with no outs, Torre brings in Rivera after all and Rivera shows that he was quite capable of getting those 6 outs. 2 consecutive years, 2 blunders that may have cost their team the ALCS.
  18. Wins/losses for starting pitchers are half useless. For relievers they're 100% useless.
  19. Nutty game...take the W and run like hell.
  20. It's too early in the thread for riddles of the Sphinx. Maybe we'll score some today.
  21. I just want to say I love the word crackerjack.
  22. Margot was a pretty highly rated prospect. I'm not really knocking DD. Just saying he was obviously given a win now mandate by JH.
  23. The greatest hitting coach in the history of the world can't prevent all his hitters from having any bad months.
