I always considered Contreras as a replacement for Devers, who was a big part of the first half of 2025's 7th best offense (even with his opening week of a million Ks, he still led the '25 Sox in OBP, Slug and OPS).

Most of us saw Durbin as a downgrade from Bregman -- and let's admit it, he still is, since Alex is a 4.2 WAR, 20-homer guy with a month to go.

But even if Contreras and Durbin gave us status quo, that means Boston's offensive improvement was counting an awful lot on a 22-year old rookie to blossom into a superstar... which a lot of us worried about last winter.

And here we are.

The Sox scored 4.86 runs per game with Devers and then “plummeted” to 4.84 without him.

They had a good offense even after dealing him.

So again - where were all these missing bats supposed to play?

You know they "tried" to acquire a 2B who could hit, a righty bat who could DH and also tried to trade Duran.

Getting a new catcher who's a career .250 hitter wasn't a priority for the O, though maybe a slight upgrade behind the plate -- just for less catcher's interference!

I will never understand forcing a team to play all 3 playoff games (potentially) on the road.  I get that they need to make the regular season important but no other sport does this.  It is totally unfair even though the Sox have a very good road record.

As I have been saying all season if Trevor Story never plays another game in a Red Sox uniform I'd be OK with that.  Good to see Roman rip a double in his first AB.

I think the biggest travesty is that there is no reseeding in the MLB playoffs. Each half of the bracket is set at the start of the playoffs, which means that one of the AL West & Central winners and the worst wildcard team is guaranteed a spot on the ALCS.

They might have tried, but clearly couldn’t find a deal to adequately replace Duran, a 29yo outfielder worth some 12 WAR over the two previous seasons.

Do you think they tried to move Duran simply to get rid of him or because they felt they had an abundance of good outfielders and decided he was the one that was most expendable but could also bring back the best return?  It would appear they were ok bringing him back and playing him.

And how much effort went into getting a 2b that could hit once they acquired Durbin?  I am not so sure Mayer was Plsn B or C as a starter…

I’d like to see reseeding each round as well.  Or just seed teams solely based on record and actually acknowledge that a team finishing second with 95 wins is actually a better team than a division winner with 88 wins by virtue of not only having a better record but also a tougher schedule to attain it.,.

MLB would rather penalize a club for playing in a tougher division.

As long as it's not the Yankees, who it's so important to feature as the sport's marquee team on the big money broadcast apps controlled by corrupt corporate oligarchies...

... and the National Press Photographers Union, who employ dozens of Judge Cams for Fox, Apple, ESPN, YES and American Idol.

It wasn't just you who worried Breslow didn't add enough bats in the offseason. It was most of the posters on this forum and a major concern all winter and through the most feeble 2 1/2 months ever of Red Sox offense to start a season.

I give Brez credit for admitting the mistake of his incomplete offseason by adding Mead and Rutschman this summer -- and it's not his fault one got immediately injured and the other still might be... or worse, is toast (is that possible at age 28?).

He did do a lot- I MEAN A LOT- this past winter, and this was after a winning season where we basically lost Gio and Bregman over the winter.

I coulda-shoulda done more, but I'm not sure what. Trade Early in January not July?

Trade even more prospects than he did for Ruta after the nice season Narvaez had?

Maybe I cut more slack than some/many others do.

I thought he did enough to significantly improve on an already good team. Every team had and has holes. Not many team can lose their ace, their 2024 ace, their 2024 IP leader plus their 4-5 got the SP'er yips. We lost Anthony and tried Mead as a boost- then poof. Now, RUT is poofing.

I see it as Durbin + Suarez over Bregman.

Not sure I follow considering that the Yanks tied for the best record in the AL last season and had to play in the wild card, and it looks like they will have to play in the wild card again this season while having the 2nd best record in the AL.

If only the Yanks had people who live in New York and work in New York running the Replay Review Center in New York to decide challenges in New York games.

Ah I see, so it's a conspiracy. What about the people in NY who are Mets fans and hate the Yanks? Or do they only hire Yankee fans to run the replay reviews?

As long as Venezuelan Edwin Moscoso is on the field, it is a conspiracy

You really want to go there again?

I just saw a replay of the play that was not shown on NESN but was shown on YES.  It shows that the umpire and the replay officials got the call right.  It was a closeup of the glove and unfortunately, as Cedanne comes down, the open side of the glove is down (web side up); as he hits the ground, the glove opens ever so slightly and the ball contacts the ground for a brief moment out of his control.

No matter what, it does not excuse a veteran like Suarez completely imploding after the call.
