Could be a key game to see if Sandoval can be any help at all. He needs 4-5 innings with no more than 2 runs allowed.

If Patrick and Bello could combine for all 9 innings and a win, that would be excellent.

That's not only the hope, it's probably the plan.

I'll take a win any way I can get it, but I'd prefer to use a 6-man rotation, with Bello in the bulk role.  Or being available in a Bennett or Tolle game and restricting those two to 3-4 innings.

Watching Jays/Yankems game and learned the Yankems haven't scored in the 1st inning in 21 straight games.

Also learned that the most runs scored in the history of MLB by inning is the 1st inning. I'm sure Bello has contributed to that number.

Thanks again for the chart which always impresses me.  This time of course we see the immense value of Bello who is getting a lot of innings (and pitches) with terrific results.    In 15 IP this month he has an ERA of 1.32.  Last month it was 14 IP and a 0.66 ERA.  That's 28 IP with an ERA of about 1.

Tonight it's lefty Sandoval and his 6.60 ERA for August which is skewed by his last outing when he gave up 7 runs to the Pirates in 4 IP.  If used tonight, Bello would be on 5 days rest.

One would think.

Last night I gave high marks to Gray for coming back out to pitch the 6th inning which cut the bullpen's job down to 3 innings.

FWIW, the Giants OPS vs lefties is .657 and against righties .731.

We often think alike, Max. I thought the exact same thing.

He probably could have used some rest, but we got the win.

The other players call the Gray types Gamers .  There a few on each team.

It is a higher peer compliment than any All Star selection.

Not as noticeable among the young multi-millionaires

Gamer.  Exactly the right term for Gray.

The one-hit complete game SO that Cease pitched against the Sox a few weeks ago had Cease throwing 120 pitches. That's the most pitches thrown in one game by a starter this season.

Somewhere Tiant is smoking his cigar and chuckling.

Tough call, but I'd vote no. Interesting stat on Mr Tiant. In 1968 he went 21-9. The following season he finished at 9-20. Both seasons were with Cleveland.

Speaking of HOF, I would vote yes for Dewey Evans. I was at a local watering hole the other day and baseball trivia came up in the conversation. My question was which major league ballplayer hit the most HR's in the decade of the '80's? No one came up with the right answer. When I informed them it was Evans, they were dumb struck. They knew who he was, but none considered him a HR hitter.

Anyway, I believe he should be inducted and we're not even talking about his excellent defense. And the Sox should have at least retired his #24 years ago.
