I think they had a number in mind for Alonso that fit their model. Once Alonso's market exceeded that number, they were out. I think they pivoted to Contreras from there.

If they had that Contreras deal in hand, what were they waiting for? That deal was a slam dunk. What if another team comes in and trades for Contreras while you are talking to Alonso and then Alonso signs elsewhere? That scenario doesn't make sense to me.

Good summation. Con Man came into play a couple of weeks after the Alonso offer was made.

Alonso meets with Red Sox on 12/8

Alonso signed with the O's on 12/11

Contreras traded to the Sox on 12/21

Timeline doesn't match up to me?

When did conversations with the Cardinals start?

It’s possible Contreras Plan B.  If he was, so what? Why is that a bad thing?  They didn’t want both, snd the one they wanted has clearly worked out…

Who said the Con Man was a bad thing? Who? Con Man definitely has worked out.

I'm just saying that I don't believe they had the Contreras deal already in hand prior to the Alonso negotiations falling apart. I've said all along that Contreras was a better player than Alonso.

Unless the Cards wanted too much and Breslow switched gears.

Trades usually do take longer because contracts need to be reviewed, etc.  But I don’t know or care.  That situation clearly worked out for Boston.

I like Contreras better and free agency adds this whole issue with contract length.  But I will give Alonso this - after Matt Olson, he is probably the most durable player in MLB.  At least so far…

If the Cards wanted too much and Breslow balked at the price, he didn't have the deal in hand then.

True. It would just mean he had established interest in Contreras first.

Which is different than "he lowballed Alonso because he knew he had the Contreras deal first."

He may already had talks, but I don't believe they were advanced enough to say he knew he had a deal. If he did, he should have pounced on it because Contreras is cheaper and better. It would have been malfeasance to sign Alonso and forgo the Contreras deal if he thought he had one.

The Cards wanted to much? I think Bloom was pretty generous giving back money on both Gray, and Con Man, so I don’t buy any of that theory at all. Things have worked out for Bres pretty well for his pickups this offseason, but he’s no mastermind, and I think things worked out in spite of Bres, and not because of him. Swap in Alonso, and Bregman, and take out Con Man, Ranger, and DUBin, and what would you have now? Like I said in spite of Bres, and not, because of him.

I’m fine with that.  Of course no matter how we layout the timeline, it’s all just speculation…

Cards have good catching prospects, so maybe Brez can entice Bloom with more pitching prospects for Ivan Herrera. An NL All-Star though not a great catcher... but one more Contreras type bat for Fenway is just what we need.

The timeline as we KNOW it isn’t speculation though.

Who knows? Maybe Breslow was holding out for that money.  It’s all guesswork anyway.

Ah the old “things work out in spite of the GM” line.  Why not just say “I do not like this CBO and will never give him credit and any success he has is pure luck because that’s how I want and need it to be”?

Not Old Red.  Apparently Breslow keeps inviting him to his Signal chats…

It’s not common for catchers to move at the deadline, despite it happening as recently as yesterday, because pitchers might not like working with someone new.

That said - keep Narvaez and Wong.  Also, ignore middle infield because some radical groundskeeper clearly planted land mines in the Fenway infield.

LF.  Move Duran. Get a bat…

Until the winning streak I don’t think many liked #12.

Breslow actually had a stellar off-season with a complete Midas Touch.  But it doesn’t help that he’s not remarkably personable.

Wong has his fans, probably more than most backup catchers…

Like I said before the winning streak most fans that I heard from, and heard wanted #12 out of town. Some of you guys crack me up how you hate the here, and now concept when things are going bad, but you hop all aboard when things are going good. The consistency of inconsistency.

How cute. Wong, and Bres wear the same number.👏

Despite it being an unpopular stance, Ive been behind this team all year save a handful of posts generated by clear frustration…

All I did was point out that the plan that Bres ended up with was not the plan he wanted in the beginning, and as I said at the time we’ll have to see how it all works out. Of course you will analyze every letter of every word, and put your little spin on it like you did when you questioned a question mark. Besides I’ve already got a bowling shirt with the Bloom Bashers on it that has worked out quite well, and I don’t want to change now.

Your scenario makes little sense.

If there was a better offer for Contreras STL would have known about it and taken it. They in no rush to trade him.

Also. I'm pretty sure GMs come to agreements with one side saying "Hold on while I'm working on something else, and before you decide to trade who we want, give me a call."

I think Brez weighed the cost of Contreras vs what the cost for Alonso would be, and realized Contreras was a better deal, unless Alonso took $xxx. Obviously, it was too low for Alonso to take, so he signed with BAL and we said yes to STL.

This is just conjecture- just like many things said on this site everyday.

I agree with one thing that many things said on here is conjecture, but there is a timeline that MVP laid out on when the Red Sox met with Alonso, when Alonso signed with Baltimore, and when the Red Sox landed Con Man. Those are facts. There is NOTHING out there that says the Red Sox had talked to Bloom prior to Alonso about the Con Man. That is conjecture.

At least I stick to words you actually say…
