Red Sox Trade Deadline Targets: Ryan Jeffers Is the Upgrade Behind the Plate We've Been Waiting For

If one of them were right handed, I’d agree. But they are too similar to exist in the same rotation in my opinion.

I think the lefty unbalanced nature of our staff may be overblown, but we do lose RHP Gray, this winter, so it makes sense. We're looking at a 5man LH'd rotation to start 2027.

Yeah it’s been killing the Sox this year…

They haven't spent a ton of time in the rotation together, somewhere about 4 weeks in total before Early hit the IL. Once Early is back Tracy is going to have to be creative in rotation spots because throwing them back to back is likely going to mean one of them suddenly starts to get hit harder because their profiles are so similar.

To be clear I really like both of them and think the Bennett trade was an incredible move by Craig, but teams are going to want MLB arms this deadline and, to me, Bennett has both the higher floor and ceiling than Early so I'd prefer to keep him around.

I'd trade Eyanson for either Langeliers or Rutschman right now, just not for Goodman or Jeffers.

I'm not convinced we lose Gray honestly. I think he may be open to reworking that deal for an additional guaranteed two years with the way he seems to be enjoying being in Boston.

Gray may be back, but he will be a FA, so we can't count on him, until he signs.

We have to realize we may need to trade away the next Harrison and Priester (or better) to get what we need.

I come back to this all the time.  If we want to obtain a player we like, we have to give up a player the other team likes.  Even Rule 5 guys, which teams give up for nothing, have the potential to be pros.

They do, but many teams are not wanting Rule 5 guys due to their own roster crunches. Our Rule 5 would have to hold way more value than theirs to want him. Granted, some teams might like 2-3 of our Rule 5 guys more than their worst 3 guys on their pending 40 man roster.

I think we need to look at prospects between 1 and 13 to get real value back.

Eyanson for 2 months of Jeffers is a felony in many states…

Agreed. I would like Goodman- hole and all, at the right price. COL seems to demand too much, though.

Colorado also doesn't trade, and seems to fear making mistakes.  People/teams like that are difficult to deal with since they want the counterparty to overpay to cover the fear of losing.  Teams like the As are use to dealing.

…. And it’s ok if the players you trade work out if you get the player you wanted (and he works out).  Thats how trades are supposed to work…

Agreed, and they should want a lot for a power hitting catcher with 3 arbs left.

I really think the Bryant deal has changed the way Colorado approaches every single move they make. They were never a trade heavy team before that but now it seems like they are terrified to make any significant moves because they were snakebitten so badly by a deal for a player that may never suit up again.

Colorado just doesnt make deadline trades.  Pending free agent?  They keep the guy and then don’t make a QO.  No one knows why.  Not even them…

They’ve made bad free agent deals before.  Mike Hampton didn’t work out there, for example…

The Bryant deal may be the worst contract in the history of the sport, all things considered. If not, it's likely top three.

Rendon is why I gave the qualifier, haha. The sole reason I'd maybe put Bryant in front of him is because Rendon's first year with the Angels, it was 2020 but still, he was a productive player. Bryant hasn't been productive in Colorado at all.

Bryant was worse because you knew at the time Bryant was worse at the time of the signing.  On the day they signed him, I said that they should trade him to the RS, to play LF, and to throw in a check for $52M.  Even before he played a game.  He turned out even worse than that, but it was a bad contract from day 1.   Bogaerts was likely a $100M overpay.

People put Chris Davis up there as well, but at least he stayed on the field for a few years and hit bombs. Also there was the "Did Chris Davis Strike Out" tracker that was entertaining. Baseball can be fun without having to justify everything through WAR IMO.
