Because it was tied after 8 innings ( 3-3), the Twins must have their  AB's in the 9th where they could lose, tie or win the game.    The last half of 9th could be played tomorrow prior to the next game.

Correct.

Then why they extended him is beyond me.

Because he has a lot of potential. I think extending him is going to look very smart in about three years.

If it's called, they'll play the bottom of the 9th tomorrow.

In Major League Baseball, a game can be "called" (meaning it's official and a winner is declared) after five innings if the home team is winning, or after five innings if the visiting team is winning or the game is tied. If the game is called before five innings are completed, it is considered suspended and will be resumed at a later date.

IMHO I would give him as much MLB ABs he can get. If the “talent” is there, I wouldn’t put attention to the stats. I would make sure he gets used to MLB pitching as soon as possible.

And several of us too.  He had accomplished nothing to warrant the extension.  His hot start in April proved a bit deceptive.   People talk about the FO/Cora jerking Devers around, well I contend they may have really messed up Kristian's mind.

Campbell has succeeded at every level he’s played at. He’s also a very good athlete. I could be wrong but I think he’ll figure it out. It was a mistake to bring him up so soon

Right now he needs to get his confidence back

That works if you aren’t pursuing a playoff spot.  Not as simple if you are.

Cora did not jerk Devers around.  In fact, he got him to embrace DH, where he excelled. Devers OPS with the Sox was .905.  With the Giants so far his OPS is .729.   With Devers gone, the Sox are making a run for the postseason.  With Devers, the Giants are losing and now just 2 games over .500.

I think Breslow had no choice but to trade Devers after he publicly refused to play 1b.

I don't think Campbell was jerked around at all.

Kinda early to be giving up on the Sox future 1st baseman.

Don’t take me wrong, If I’m Boston FO I want him to play as much as possible at MLB level. Again, I extended him for a reason. Then we can agree or not if that was a good move or whether 60 M are peanuts, etc. For instance I wouldn’t extended, not yet.

OTOH I don’t think he’s going to be the future 1B of this team —neither Casas

I don’t think he’s giving up on Campbell, but they extended him before he had ever played a major league game. He had only played 137 minor league games (not even equivalent to a full minor league season). That does seem a tad premature.

To be fair, they also tried to extend Mayer and Anthony, but they turned the offer down.

Campbell is way too good an athlete to have him at 1B

My guess he’s going to play 2B, Mayer SS and Rafaela CF in a regular basis if so. Obviously all 3 can play other positions if needed which is great.

Mayer at SS? Are the Sox trading or DFA'ing Story?

Wonder how the rule works then. I had understood the latter was in effect.

My guess is in a couple of years Mayer is going to be the titular SS obviously if he proves he can hit at both sides of the plate consistently and stays healthy. Story is going to be a utility piece and DHing and some point.

Mayer staying healthy is a big IF.

Too good an athlete to play 1st base. That's a new one.

Look at some of the guys playing 1B now. It’s probably the easiest position to play if you’re not athletically inclined. There’s a reason players get moved to 1B. Putting Campbell there would waste his athleticism.

Obviously, things will change if Bregman opts out after this season.

In theory, yes, but being athletic does not mean you can play certain positions well.

He looked so bad at 2B, it's hard to imagine such a massive improvement being made. Perhaps he can play the OF, but we already are overloaded there.

3 outs away from being tied with the Yanks for the top WC slot.

(A win puts us 5.5 behind TOR for the best record in the AL.)

The Sox need another outfielder like a submarine needs a screen door.

What is he-two years out of college? He’s definitely a project but athletic players have a better chance of significant improvement than overweight out of shape guys. I think there’s a good chance he’ll work out fine.
