Oh, good.  Now our pitching coach goes to the mound to provide detailed guidance and maybe screw up Alcala.

Posted

Alcala gets 2 outs.  And the run was of course unearned.

In comes reliever #7, Bernardino. lefty vs lefty.

Great, clutch win by the good guys.  Well managed by Cora even though 90% of the credit goes to the heroics of the Sox.  I personally would have started Wong tonight and would have been dead wrong.

The main reason I watch these games is because of Cora.

Giolito gave up 5 in 4 IP, but the bullpen was excellent--1 ER in 7 IP.

Sox now 2-4 on a mountainous road trip.

Rest tomorrow, face the Dodgers at the Fens Fri, Sat, and Sun.

Momentum heading into tomorrow's game. What's that? No game tomorrow. So much for the momentum.

Hard to call this momentum, and no game tomorrow is a blessing.

Friday is righty Sheehan vs Bello.  I like that matchup.  Saturday is Kershaw vs Crochet, both lefties.  Sunday is May vs Buehler, both righties with high ERA's.

Dodgers lead MLB in runs scored, but their team ERA is 23d.  Sox are 5th in runs scored and 10th in team ERA.

If the Sox can take 2/3, that's 4-5 against three division leaders.

Then 3 @ the Twins, who are 49-53 overall but 28-20 at home.

The one thing I fear is that Chapman will have a complete mental breakdown and use that splitter more.  It looks awfully tough to hit.

They managed to pull this one out. They won’t pull many out if they get behind by 5 runs

The game announcers said the Phillies have not lost this year when up by 5 at any point in the game.

So, yes, winning was tough.  Why not give the Sox some credit?

Italics/facetiousness notwithstanding, you love to comment on Cora in the game threads.

Fact:  when the Sox fell behind, I went ahead with doing the dishes and vacuuming our single level home.  When I returned, I could not believe that 6-5 score.

I'm probably wrong, but I think the Sox lineup is effective because just about everybody--except Toro and Wong--is a threat to do something good.

Against a lefty starter tonight, 8 of the 9 Sox rbi's were by righty batters.   Duran, Yoshida, and Abreu combined for 9 K's.   Cora does know what he is doing.

The sox - Phillies games 1 and 3 were incredible

My goodness, I forgot!  Thanks for the reminder.  The Sox played the Phillies tough in 2/3 games at their park.  We win game 1 if Narvaez doesn't have that passed ball.

Sorry

No credit for getting down by five runs. I doubt they’ll win another game this year if they get down by that many runs. It’s a recipe for failure.

Red Sox batters struck out 44 times in three games in Philly.

That's more Ks than Dustin Pedroia in his rookie year, Nomar the year he won his first batting crown, and Fred Lynn in his last season in Boston.

Wade Boggs, who led the majors in plate appearances when he played for the Red Sox, struck out 44 times or less in seven years.

I watch the hitters and the pitchers...it's a brave new world...every pitcher can throw 98 to 103 it seems, some have changeups that Tommy Glavine would be proud...the hitters are timing and taught to drive the ball...the end result is a ton of Ks...Roman Anthony looks strangely like a throwback--he has a line drive swing and even though he is set up to be this power hitter I wonder if he thrives at MLB by being the line drive doubles, RBI guy--and here's a guy who struck out 4x twice in the series...contact hitters or the idea of contact hitters--the best ones never faced this type of pitching every day---including multiple different relievers who have same 100 mph repertoire...Gwynn, Boggs faced mostly same pitcher 3x at least, often 4 in a game--definitely all the pre-1970s hitters contact guys didn't have to deal with velocity as much or face more than 1 or 2 pitchers in a single game. You could face 4 different pitchers in some games in today MLB

100% danny.  Pitching has advanced to an almost absurd level.  We've reached the point that a guy who throws in the low 90's is a soft tosser.

The good news, as such, is that you can still have an exciting and eventful game like last night in spite of so many guys swishing up a storm.  Just have to reduce expectations for what constitutes good baseball, I guess.
