Showing that velocity isn’t everything. Cortes is a pitcher, not a thrower. He’s got 4 pitches, hits the edges, doesn’t walk a lot of people and moves the ball around. One pitch often sets up another.

Absolutely the right word--a pitcher--and an excellent description of why he was so good tonight.

Can anybody play this game at a ML level anymore. I have not seen everybody yet. But the only team I have seen look like a ML team is Philadelphia.

I think both teams are trying to forfeit this game.

Nope. The Sox weak hitting took care of that little dilemma. K's by Duran and Abreu, both lefty bats vs. righty pitcher. Then a week grounder by O'Neill. Sox now 0/4 with RISP.

Not true. Rain delays have always been problematic for pitchers. The longer a rain delay goes, the worse it is.

Houck was not sharp tonight, but he still should have been out of the inning allowing only 1 run

Not the way it is now. Concentrating on spin rate and forcing them to throw hard from the very beginning of their stints to the end has made pitchers more vulnerable to everything.

After 7 innings, this game is tied, 1-1, but for Valdez's really awful error.

Of course, the Sox pitching should get no credit because the Yankees are just another AAAA team that can't hit a lick. That's the new rule, isn't it? Never, ever give a Sox pitcher any credit.

If Valdez turns that DP the Yankees have a goose egg

I am not gonna blame the pitching though. I mean 3 runs is 3 runs.

Gonzalez has 2 of the Sox 4 hits tonight, plus he made a spectacular grab off a very high Devers throw--and still landed on 1b. His OPS is .788.

Why would Smith ever be allowed back at 1b?

I think you have a very inflated view of MLB from yesteryear.

The Red Sox have a tremendous opportunity ahead of them the next few years due to their athleticism once they learn how to really use it. the AL looks more and more like the AL I grew up with. Bunch of men old before their time creaking their way through a season.

I think contemporary baseball has a very inflated view of the value of using advanced stats to guide a team....that is unless they plan to allow 45 men in the dugout....half of them pitchers.

Nope. If the DP is good, Houck returns for the 5th and give up 4 or 5 runs.

Yankems tried their best to get SOX back into the game, but the SOX turned down the help. Abreu has been MIA since drunkenly not handling the dugout steps.

Rookies are still rookies. Duran was equally disappointing and he's not a rookie. O'Neill could not get a big hit because it would lead to RBI's, a meaningless random occurrence stat

It is called Neverland, which is where Smith should be. And Hamilton should always start over Valdez

I won’t argue that, but it is what it is. I don’t particularly like that aspect of the current game either.

I think players make more mental errors now, physical errors have always happened. You’d be shocked at how many errors those decent Sox teams from 1967-80 made.

Yoshida !!!!!!!!!!
