It was NEVER a good idea to make Whitlock a starter. He was a weapon in the bullpen. He had TJ surgery. They ruined him just like they did with Daniel Bard.

And who cares if he wanted to be a starter. That was not in his or the team's best interest. He was under contract. An employee does what the boss says. The boss screwed this up royally. Bloom and Breslow.

Now he will have to have another TJ surgery of some type and be out for all of next year. I hope he comes back and is able to pitch. If he does, it has to be as an 8th inning guy.

He may have gotten hurt, a lot, even if he stayed a RP'er, but I tend to agree. Moving him to the rotation probably led to more injuries. (Just my opinion.)

Sometimes, moving pitchers to the rotation works, like Crawford. (Houck has moved back and forth.)

I only disagree with the Sox ruining Bard by making him a starter. He was overrated as a reliever to begin with…

Why was he overrated as a reliever, exactly?

Bard started sucking at the end of 2011 right before conversion.

9/1 - 10/1/11: 10.64 ERA, 5.01 xFIP, 11 IP, 13 ER, 11 H, 9 BB, 11 K, 1.82 WHIP, 4 L

Daniel Bard ruined 2011 for the Red Sox and put them on the downward spiral we are on today.

He did a really good job as a RP'er. The ability to go 2-3 innings cannot be undervalued, and his ability to include the 9th inning in those long relief games is somewhat rare.

AS RP

2021: 1.96 ERA/2.84 FIP (1.105 WHIP) in 73.1 IP (11 games finished) That's 5-20 more IP than many closers get.)

2022:

0.93/2.21 in first 4 RP games

(started 9 games)

3.34/3.05 in 18 games after starting

2022 as RP: 2.75 ERA, 0.788 WHIP (.547 OPS Against)

His 2.2 fWAR as a RP'er from '21 to '22 ranked 22nd in MLB.

His 73 xFIP- ranked 10th.

His 51 ERA- ranked 2nd.

His 5.43 K/BB ratio ranked 5th.

What does it take to be a good RP'er, for you?

That was for 2 years and 112 IP.

2023 was not good:

4.95 as RP (5.23 as SP) .784 OPSA as RP

3 innings? Bard only pitched 2 IP+ 11 times from 09-11 and not once did he get to 2.2 IP.

My bad. I did not see the post was about Bard not Whit.

He walked too many people for those high leverage roles he pitched in...

Bard had a great arm. Psychological problems derailed his career.

Much ado about very little. BP pitchers come ago, not just season to season, but throughout the season. MLB teams can have 26 players on their active roster, of whom 13 are normally pitchers, and of those 5 are starters and 8 are relievers.

So far this season (48 games, 30% of the whole season) the Sox have used 14 different relievers, not including Reyes. They are literally a dime a dozen, except of course, for Mr. Kenley Jansen, who's being paid $16M to pitch one inning every 3d game--what a freaking waste of money.

The rotation--Bello, Pivetta, Crawford, Whitlock, Houck, and now Criswell--are the heart and soul of the 2024 Sox, who are, somewhat miraculously, definitely in the hunt for a wild card slot even though 70% of the season is still to be played.

You have to feel bad for Whitlock. He's reportedly been working his ass off, but the arm just won't cooperate.

True, and I don’t know if keeping him in the BP would have kept him healthy, but the Only healthy year he’s had was when he was in the pen.

Good and great 7th and 8th guys are not a dime a dozen. Whitlock was an elite 7th and 8th inning guy before the Sox decided to make him a mediocre starter and it led to him getting hurt. Now he's done for a long time. Stupid!
