It would be bad juju to break the string of consecutive game threads, so although it is the 6th inning of a WINNING Sox effort so far , here's the thread. Now we can't be blamed for costing the Sox a shot at the WC.

" It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Red Sox sportswriter Charles Dickens' take on the last 12 years of the SOX winning 2 championships and finishing last in their own division 6 times. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Houck exceeds his peers by getting 15 outs on 96 pitches, but leaves the 6th with no outs, bases loaded and an 8 run lead. Good luck Winck.

But Winck immediately gives up a hit on his 1st pitch, as have several Sox relievers when called on.

Immediately gives up a 2nd hit and run

Then walks in a run , after a pop out. So 9-4 with bases loaded and 1 out.

Two s***** teams trying to out-s*** one another. Neither team can pitch. No matter what else might be wrong with you, if you can't pitch in MLB, YOU SUCK!

Story continues to shine in the field at SS. No telling what the score would be without him out there....maybe tied....9-9!

No doubt that Story is exemplary as a defensive ballplayer.

Yoshida grounds into his 19th double play of the season. after looking it up, i was a little surprised that he's only tied for 5th in GIDP. Correa is tops with 28(!) and Bogey is at third with 20.

Jim Rice during his career hit into a large number of DP's. I would never mention that to Mr Rice in person because he still looks strong as a bull.

I finally found something I like about the new post season structure...No its not that it is simply another thing that has made a fool out of Bloom. Its that the difference between the s*** teams and at least teams that are not s*** in MLB is being able to make the expanded WC. If you can't crawl up to make the new expanded WC....YOU SUCK. You are a bad team.

I like certainty. It makes life easier.

However, I would ask Rice if it's true that he cracked his bat on a checked swing.

Well, that's certainly one way to look at it, but I do believe there's different degrees of suckage.

LOL....my favorite player of all time. how could i forget all those double plays? he led the league for four years from '82-'85 and holds the single season record of 36. i've never met him and would never mention it if i did. my brother met him a couple years ago and said he's one of the nicest ballplayers he's ever met.

my brother asked him that! Mr Rice said "yes, it's true" and that he actually did it twice and once with a golf club.

Lots less with the expanded Post Season. Its a 15 team league. If you want to claim that the two teams at the bottom are not just bad but awful teams, AAA teams, I can buy that.

But if you are one of the 7 teams that did not make the post season and did not finish at the very bottom of the league you are a bad team. The Sox play like a bad team. They look like a bad team. Their hitting is inconsistent and their fielding is laughable. Most telling they pitch like a bad team.

A team is what their record says they are. Right now I would describe the SOX as mediocre, but there are enough games remaining to definitely change that to bad.

When it comes to nice guys, one would be hard pressed to find a nicer guy than ex-SOX great Bobby Doerr. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Doerr at YAZ's induction ceremony. Down-to earth complete gentleman. Besides being an excellent 2nd baseman for the SOX, he had the added responsibility of keeping his good friend Teddy Ballgame in line.

Obviously, Ted Williams is my favorite ballplayer, and if asked who is my second favorite, it would be tough. But if you put a gun to my head, I would probably go with Dewey Evans, who s/b in the HOF and whose number should have been retired years ago.

Dewey narrowly beats out Big Papi as my 2nd favorite.

There are 15 teams in the AL. Of those there are three teams at the very bottom this year that are flat awful, Royals, White Sox and Athletics. 3 awful teams instead of the usual 2 awful teams. If you want to call those three teams barely AAAA teams I can buy that. They are AAAA teams at best. They have amassed records that boggle the mind. So 6 teams make the post season thanks to the expanded WC. That leaves actually 6 teams that are simply bad teams.

The "mediocre" teams are the teams that have enough team to make the last WC card spots usually by adding at the trade deadline. Red Sox baseball ops told us how bad they were at the trade deadline. Were we not listening?

You're correct. A .500 team is the definition of mediocre.

I think the big challenge for the rest of the year is if the Red Sox can stay above 500, or not.

Definitely. That and the big race for 4th place with the Yanks are the only things of interest for Sox fans now.

The rest of baseball is just loving that the Red Sox, and Yankees are bottom feeders now.

...and finish above the Yanks.

I'm still hoping we can pass the Jays, but it might take a sweep of the 3 remaining games with them, and that seems highly unlikely.

(Note: all our series with TOR have been sweeps- two by us and one by them.)

during a Red Sox series in Arlington in the early 90's, i met and visited with Dewey in the hotel dining area. super nice guy. he even asked me to join his table for drinks. i said thanks and politely declined. never met Doerr. saw Ted at a baseball card convention in Memphis, also in the early 90's.
