He had a 112 OPS+ from 2019-2021 and was still pre-prime.

I expected him to at least stay the same as he entered prime.

He did not.

Why discount his 2022 numbers? It's probably more likely that he'd repeat the most recent season that he would repeat a short stretch from 2020.

How many Rule 5 players do we add to the 40?

I'm guessing 6 or 7.

Probables?

Wikelman Gonzalez

Luis Perales

Grant Gambrell

Stephen Scott

Shane Drohan

Possibles?

Brainer Bonaci

I'd move Scott down to the possibles/bubble section.

If the new CBO is from outside the organization, there are names that could be brought in that none of us have on our radar.

Two names which keep coming up from outside the organization are Breslow and Fuld. I understand that the Red Sox have not asked permission to speak to either one as of yet. If Kennedy is to be believed the Red Sox plan to interview more than one candidate. I think this process may not play out until we'll past the World Series.

Kim Ng's contract with the Marlins concludes at the end of the 2023 season as well. I've heard her name recently on the wind.

That’s all you’d move?

He was a tweener

I would protect:

Wikelman

Perales

Gambrell

Drohan

They are all MLB starting pitcher upside guys.

I would consider protecting:

Bonaci

Scott

Bonaci is going to the AFL. It'll be interesting to see which position he focuses on.

Scott is a good player, but I'm not sure they trust him as the 3rd catcher/bench 1B. His defense is just ok and still a work in progress.

We don’t have a third catcher on the 40, so if we do t want another Alfaro type, Scott seems like a viable option.

Suppose we get two top line pitchers for 2024.

SP 1 FA

SP 2 FA

SP 3 Bello

SP 4 Pivetta (yes he's back in my grace)

SP 5 Sale, Crawford, Houck

Clos. Jansen

Setup Martin

BP Winckowski, Whitlock, Schreiber, Bernardino, others

Do you think this lineup will score enough runs?

1 Rafaela/Duran CF

2 Devers 3B

3 Duvall, LF

4 Casas 1B

5 Story SS

6 Abreu RF

7 Yoshida DH

8 Reyes 2B

9 Wong C

Combination of players, LF, CF, RF, 1B, DH, 6 total from Rafaela, Abreu, Duran, Casas, Yoshida, Duvall

I know I know....many of you aren't enthralled with Abreu, yet but

Can he exceed Verdugo's numbers and save the Sox $6-8M?

80 Runs

36 Doubles

13 HR

54 RBI

.753 OPS (He's ranked 5th out of 9 eligible right fielders in AL. He's closer to bottom 4 than the top 3, all over .803 OPS)

Again, for me, it's like watching Beni and I lost interest in Beni long ago.

So no one thinks Noah Song is worth protecting?

Not sure, anymore. I think it will be good enough, and the D looks better.

He really has the profile of a platoon guy.

I really like Abreu and Rafaela, but we’d need Duvall back before I trade Dugo or Duran.

Our offense has been absolutely dismal in September. Losing Casas hurt, but still...

Posted (edited)

Well the 'color commentator' on NESN said "he looks like an everyday player to me" after his second dinger in September.

I have no doubt Abreu will hit 20+ home runs.

Just for comparison of September call up numbers;

GP AB R Hits 2B HR RBI BA OPS

27 76 11 15 01 05 12 .197 .766 Casas

22 58 09 21 05 02 11 .362 .983 Abreu

I can make a stronger case that Abreu belongs more than Casas as of 10/4 And he can't play much worse defense, no?

Nice job by Bloom for getting Abreu from the Astros for 2 month rental of Vaz (he didn't even start for them)

No way I'm trading Duran. He's a keeper. His athleticism is off the charts.

Other GMs see the same things we see.

I’m not for handing him away, but who is against getting a better player in return?

Alfaro's carrying tool was supposed to be his bat. Not sure what Scott's is.

Exceed? Not sure. I don't even know if he's a starter. I think he's a 4th OFer long term. I think he can be a productive OFer and I like him a lot. He's just a placeholder in RF until Anthony shows up IMO.

Abreu is NOT a 900 OPS guy IMO. I'm not sure he's a consistent 800 OPS guy. He can get on base and he is a good fielder at all 3 OF positions. There's some value there.

Maybe a platoon bat?

Maybe a platoon bat?

Anthony or Abreu?

Abreu didn't have tremendous splits this year or last. I think he's ok enough against LHP where he's not going to kill you. If you have an obvious weakside platoon bat you're trying to squeeze into the lineup then maybe.

Posted
Smaller than Casas? We handed him the 1B job.

Casas had a prospect pedigree that Abreu doesn't have. Most people could project what Casas would do in 2023. Abreu is still a bit of an unknown for 2024. It's not like he's really torn up the minors. He had a crazy hot stretch at the end of the summer in AAA, but was just ok before then.

Abreu and Duvall.

Get some SP and bring on 2024!!

I don't mind bringing Duvall back if he stays in a corner OF spot or fills in at 1b (he played there earlier in his career). He doesn't have a crazy platoon split, but should be a cheap option. If not Duvall, someone similar.

I was going off what Cora said about Abreu in the spring. Maybe I'm bit too optimistic. I just don't see much difference (offensively) between Verdugo and Abreu.
