He was always able to. The problem with him his consistency. Even the past couple of years he had hot stretches like he's currently on but then looked like dog s*** the remainder of the year. I'm not sold on him until he can do this for the entire year

That's why he's a 5th starter AT BEST.

Right now he's 4th best behind Bello, Paxton, and Crawford. When and if Houck and/or Whitlock return, I would put him ahead of both of them. If Good Sale returns, fine, Pivetta is 5th best.

Some stats to back that up. Among Sox starters, Pivetta's WHIP is 2d best, 1.13 to Paxton's 1.09 and ahead of Sale's 1.19. Among Sox starters, his ERA of 4.08 is 4th best. Among Sox starters, his IP is/are 88.1, second to Bello's 96.

I believe his breaking balls are sharper than earlier in the season and that he uses them more--to good effect. Thus his ERA of 4.08 is the best of his career--with the caveat that it's just 88 innings (vs. 133 in 2017, 164 in 2018, 155 in 2021, and 175 last year).

A 5th starter AT BEST who led the team in innings last year by a mile, and is second this year.

Leading the team in innings isn't good if your numbers are terrible

You're breaking out stats that are mixed in with relief appearance.

What's his WHIP and ERA as a starter this year?

That won't tell you much either, because most of his relief appearances have been long ones.

Pivetta's numbers are far from terrible.

He's a career 5 ERA with a 1.36WHIP.

He is far from great. He's been in the league 7 years and has a total WAR of 7.

I know. This isn't a good pitching staff!

BOS SP:

27th in IP

24th in fWAR

27th in HR/9

30th in HR/FB

4.39 ERA and 103 ERA+ (better than average) with the Red Sox. A #3 to #4 starter, on average.

Also what's his number as a starter only with the Red Sox. You mixed in his relief appearances.

2020 - 1.80 in 2 starts

2021 - 4.56 in 30 starts

2022 - 4.56 in 33 starts

2023 - 5.89 in 9 starts

How many pitchers are out there that can do it consistently all year, year after year? Seems pretty rare to me.

Not going there. The WHIP and ERA are real and it doesn't matter whether or not he started, especially when we know: 1) he sort of started from the bullpen; 2) he improved dramatically after he went to the bullpen, which gave him time to work on his pitches; 3) he just started, went 7.1 innings, and gave up 3 runs for a QUALITY START.

Except his numbers aren’t terrible. ERA under 4.00 isn’t terrible

Sounds like he should be a reliever!

When was is ERA under 4?

On June 7, 2021 and August 21, 2022, as well as some earlier dates in those years.

Also, it’s under 2.00 since May 25th, this year.

No need to be hung up on full season numbers.

You choose to be confined to specific date ranges.

The point is, Pivetta has been pretty inconsistent. But who knows, maybe he's turned a corner?

True, but I think people might be surprised at how long some of his goos stretches are.

The problem is, when he is bad, he is really bad.
