Some folks have suggested the reason they didn't spend more was to save some money for the trade deadline. That's kind of a sad joke, for obvious reasons.

$16 million under the tax threshold - why so much? Maybe math isn't Chaim's strong suit?

From Yale's webpage: "The major in Classics is primarily a liberal arts major, with enormous potential for the pursuit of interdisciplinary interests. Students attain proficiency in Greek and Latin, and are trained to develop powers of critical analysis in studying the important periods and major authors of Greek and Roman literature. Ancient art, history, and culture are studied both as an end in themselves, and as a key to understanding later developments in Western history and civilization. Students are encouraged to take a wide range of courses in neighboring fields such as history, philosophy, and comparative literature."

I get your point, but it's still weird they wouldn't spend a bit more on this team, especially the starting pitching.

They went over the tax threshold last year, but dove back under it this year while other teams were spending big.

There's stuff that just doesn't make sense. But it certainly might be more a case of confusion and ineptitude than not caring.

Ineptitude being the operative word here.

Maybe they went so far under because the Sox didn’t want any of the remaining high-priced free agents, and decided not to just spend for the sake of PR…

The trade deadline is when Bloom is at his best. Looking for that 3rd option in the fork in the road. That’s when that Yale education comes in handy.

I would call this a very charitable interpretation, but we're all speculating.

The sake of PR is good for business if you get better players that make a better team and lead to a better record.

I'd ask Henry, but he'd just laugh and look at his watch then Sammy would shoo him away.

Dude why can't you detect sarcasm like, at all?

Sherlock Holmes would struggle to detect irony on a thread consumed with bitterness. The value of talksox is it gives each of us a chance to vent when the Sox lose and lose again.

Well, he's entitled, isn't he?

I once had the concept of "perceived deprivation" explained to me. It's the product of success. Once you've won 4 WS in 15 years, even though it followed an 86 year drought, expectations are raised to a standard inconceivable during the so-called curse.

But, honestly, I think that's OK. We know what good management is capable of and won't settle for less. Well, I probably will, but what the heck.

Not to me. The whining gets old quick, but to each his own.

There's just nothing to be cheerful about right now. It's June 6, we're 12 games behind the division leader and 5.5 games behind the last Wild Card spot. And the only possible improvements to look forward to are the returns of Duvall and Story.

You can be unhappy and critical without being whiny. That's not what the board is for, but let's not open that can of worms.

I don't mind those who complain about the Red Sox -- that's part of talkingsox. If every poster was super happy no matter what the standings said, we'd know we all were getting secretly funded for such contrived optimism.

I can do without those, however, who get off on trying to prove others' opinions wrong every single day.

That's what discussion board or forum is for. I can do without the whining every single day. But again, to each his own.

I've been trapped in here so long that the whining only really bothers me from one poster who gets put on ignore at the start of every season just because of the gamethreads.
