The media will still bash those who do poorly more than most city medias, especially if they are being paid a lot.

Again, I don't think it has much affect on 99% of players, if not more.

Currently, the media is just down on the Red Sox. They'd rather cover the other 3 teams anyway. Guys like Shaughnessy and Pete Abraham still have their jobs to do, but I'm not sure they have the negative influence that existed 20 years ago.

You are the reason we are having this conversation. Initially, you showed concern that Yoshida may not be able to handle playing here. But now there is no pressure cooker? I don't get it.

All I said was that I was at the wait, and see mode on Yoshida to see how he handles playing in Boston just like I do with anyone, and you guys took it from there. I was agreeing with you that there might not be the same kind of pressure now that there has been in previous years, and that Bloom is under the most pressure. I didn’t know my opinion would cause such a tizzy.

Oh that bad bad Shaugnessy again.

I’m willing to bet most players don’t even listen to local sports talk radio. Why would they?

There is more to media than talik radio.

Again, I don't think it matters.

I do think friends might tell players what is being said about them.

Again, I agree.

I do think the negativity has been constant and excessive.

I think players were more hurt by what Eck would say during games than what reporters would say or write. See: Price, JBJ.

I believe pretty much all players pretty much know what is being said about them, and in Boston that includes Cora, Bloom, Kennedy, and especially JH, and it comes from many different sources. Who knows maybe even Talksox.

Yea Eck was really tough on Price Saying he took to long between pitches was really over the top.

I've heard him speak English. He wrote his introduction entirely in English. He doesn't speak it fluently, but I've heard he is actively working on it.

That’s fine. Good for him in learning a second language. Of course, it still doesn’t mean he listens to local talk radio in English…

I think you’re inflating your (and our) importance.

There are probably 10,000 Red Sox forums on the Internet. The chances that anyone in the Sox organization even knows this website exists are almost nil.

Also growing up nowadays with any athletic skill garners so much positive attention from family, friends and hangers-on that anyone who actually makes MLB could easily have an entourage that filters the media…

Many likely know much of what is said, but some likely do not.

I'm not sure how much anything affects these guys. True, many may have gone most of their lives hearing mostly glowing comments from everyone around them, and maybe they freak out, a bit, but I never felt it made much of a difference.

I'm pretty sure a few players are affected.

Maybe Yoshida will, but if he does well- no worries.

Well it is one way to help learn a local language. But as an English-speaking American who once moved to a non-English speaking country, a much better way is to watch movies that you’re already familiar with in the new language.

Talk radio offers almost nothing in that regard

But then you don't get the local nuance of hearing guys like Frank from Gloucester, Butch from the Cape, etc.

What was it about Price? Yuck about ERod’s rehab appearance. Wow! Once again way over the top.

Dick from Dayton tops them all.

One could argue more dice rolls worked better in 2022 vs 2021, at least the winter ones.

(Kike was a 2020 addition)

2021 dice rolls: Renfroe, Richards, Perez, Ottavino, Andriese, Sawamura

2022 dice rolls: Wacha, Hill, Strahm, Story (JBJ trade)

In season:

2021: Schwarber, Iggy, Shaw, Robles, Davis

2022: McGuire, Pham, Hosmer, EValdez & Abreu and M Ferguson & C Rosier

Story wasn't a dice roll - a Top 10 Free Agent doesn't really qualify (and of course it has not gone well)

But 2021 got the names you had - Kike was a signing for the 2021 season so that counts ... it had a chance to work, but he was a utility player. And you left off getting Garrett Whitlock in the Rule V draft - the biggest win of them all.

Henry has booted Theo, Ben and Dave in spite of 4 rings won and massive growth in franchise value.

It's pretty hard to predict what he'll do at this point...

I will say Chaim is on the block. Henry has actually been fairly predictable - when fans get mad at him, he will swing the axe. It is almost all straight public pressure. The 3 GMs he let go previously all did exactly what he wanted them to do for the most part.

Good point, here. I will add that one could view it as a dice roll in that they rolled the dice on spending big on him vs Bogey.
