Can you imagine if we repeat the Betts and Price deal with a similar Devers and Sale deal.

We had fun with the "half Price" aspect of the deal, now, we could just say half-price Sale.

Maybe it would be a Fire-Sale

I'd almost bet some GMs are trying to take advantage of Bloom's Grinch status by trying to help him out and taking Sale off his hands -- as long as Chaim agrees to pay half of the contract again. At half price, Chris would be worth taking a flier on, because that's about the cost of an average MLB starter these days.

You can almost hear the devious wheels turning: he did it once with Price... let's see how desperate this sucker is to keep his job in Boston...

If the Sox have to take on half of the salary, I'd just take the risk and hold onto Sale. If you trade him, you won't have even an outside shot at a full rotation at this point.

If the Sox eat $40mil over the next two years, I’d be willing to deal off a nothing prospect to take him off your hands. His upside is worth the $5-$10mil. But at $29 mil per annum, he isn’t worth it

His upside is 0.5-1 fWAR? You could say his upside is 2019 Chris Sale which was 3.6 fWAR or about 28.8M.

It was dumb to limit the return then, it would be stupider to do it now especially when the Sox are well below the lux cap.

If Sale is traded, Red Sox fans' favorite part will be getting to watch him pitch for someone else while Boston still pays half his salary.

Posters' favorite part will be getting to blame Dave Dombrowski, even if Chaim Bloom reinvests the savings in wins Below replacement players...

DD shouldn't have extended an injured Sale.

Chaim shouldn't trade Sale if the expectations are that the Sox are trying to compete in 2023.

Unless they're punting 2023 and all they care about is clearing payroll.

Who knows, maybe they are plotting a Devers + Sale trade. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

I can always just watch the Marlins for free if it's the same product the Sox will be putting on the field.

They have actively said that they will not be doing that though?

They've been saying a lot of stuff. Still waiting for the starter with leadership, upside and innings.

Until Bloom somehow unleashes an unlikely multi-team multi-player blockbuster that says goodbye to Devers, Pivetta, Houck and Verdugo (his only touchable MLB trade chips), and lands a return that miraculously transforms this abysmal roster into an overnight sensation, the direction is clear:

They're all out. It's Lose Now Mode.

So… innings. The other two are less quantifiable…

Kluber was my guy from the beginning, but we'll see.

Teams do get better without outside intervention (see the 2022 Baltimore Orioles), it's just not very likely.

Not once moon has also packaged Soler and Garcia together in a trade.

Since we added 2 DHs, I have not included Soler in any BTV suggested trades.

I have packaged Dugo in with AGarcia and a SPer package, many times, and lately I have been adding M Rojas to the deals.

I'm not thrilled with AGarcia in RF, especially in Fenway, but I'm not thrilled with Dugo there, either, and I'm hoping taking on Garcia's salary, which we can do and still reset, would mean we can get a SP'er without trading a top 5 or 6 prospect.

BTW, doing this plus a Kluber and or Andrus signing (or Rojas included in the trade) would actually make me think this winter was an overall winner, despite the bad taste left by Bogey's departure.

Garcia is 89th percentile for arm strength and 74th for sprint speed. He gets a bad jump on balls, but I think he'd be better than Verdugo or Renfroe defensively.

I'm assuming you mean the deal would add a young, controllable MLB starting pitcher. Otherwise, I don't see how losing your three best starters, plus an All-Star Silver Slugger shortstop -- and downgrading with lesser players -- could be considered winning anything.

Losing Eovaldi, Wacha and Hill while adding his Marlins’ starter, Kluber, and a full season of Bello certainly has a legitimate chance to be an improvement.

Not to mention, replacing Bogaerts, Cordero/Dalbec, and Bradley/Refsnyder with Yoshida, Casas, and Andrus, not to mention Avisail Garcia, also has a legitimate chance to be an overall upgrade.

Right or wrong?

And there there’s the bullpen…

People are overstating what Wacha, Hill and Eovaldi actually did in 2022.

You're right, and yet the horrible truth is that Hill was #1 in fWAR, Wacha was #3, and Eovaldi was #7.

That's the level of inadequacy we're dealing with here.

That's why upgrades were needed.

That pitching staff SUCKED and I guess the hope is that internal options will be better this year than last season. I guess that's the plan.

They had money, not spending it on at least one starter is pretty f***ing dumb. Two would have been preferred.

Agreed, and I'm not trading for him, because I want him, but he would likely not be worse than Dugo on D or O, and if we can get Luzardo, Lopez or another SP without losing a top 5-6 prospect, I'm thinking double yes!

A package that brings us Luzardo, M Rojas and Garcia fills all 3 of our highest need areas in one trade. It keeps us under the tax line by enough to still add Kluber and Fulmer, although I doubt we'd do that, too.

It shouldn't cots us Mayer, Casas, Bello, Bleis or even Rafaela. I'm not sure they want Dugo or Duran, but giving them Yorke, Romero or Walter would be worth it, to me.

@ChrisCotillo

In passing, Tom Werner called out Chris Sale this winter, saying: "Chris Sale has to perform at the level we expect him to."

Sale hadn't heard it until this week.

“I just got goosebumps. That kind of fired me up... I'll double down on it with him."

1. This confirms that Werner is the good one.

2. This also confirms that Sale thinks he's really ready to go.
