As @ianmbrowne reported, Marcelo Mayer has been sent from Portland to Fort Myers and won't play again this year while continuing to rehab his left shoulder (inflammation that he feels when swinging). He finishes 2023 having hit 236/.306/.433 w/13 HR and 34 XBH in 78 Gs though those numbers were dragged down by a few rough weeks at the end while he was dealing with the shoulder issue. He'll take part in some instructional league activities starting next week. An AZ Fall League assignment would be a consideration if he gets to 100% health. But priority with this decision was a healthy, full, normal offseason.

Despite the injury, he really didn't jump out and impress.

He's young and has plenty of time to grow, but I have to think these farm basher people are going to go off on Mayer, while others say he's "untouchable."

How about this Kristian Campbell kid? He was the comp pick we got in the 4th round from Georgia Tech.

Small sample size, for sure (just 49 ABs), but with just 1 HR, he leads our farm in OPS at 1.079 (among all players with 49+ ABs)

.508 OBP

.571 SLG

Another SS drafted by the Sox! UGHHH!

Seems to be a contact bat who hasn't tapped into his power potential. He'll probably see more time in the OF next year to better utilize his speed. I'm not going to get worked up over A ball numbers though. Seems like AA is a much bigger jump than it ever has been before.

I actually had a dream a few weeks ago that in 2024 the Boston Red Sox end up drafting a short stop with their first-round pick. And everyone got angry.

Sure it's not a deja-dream?

I honestly would not mind, if they draft 4 SSs out of their top 8 picks, every year.

Neither would I.

Realistically you're not drafting 4 SS every year. You're drafting a SS, a 2B, a 3B an an outfielder every year. They just all played SS up until that point.

Exactly. A point, no matter how many times repeated, is not understood by a select few posters, here.

Also, the hit rate on drafting everyday players vs pitchers on any picks outside the top 10.

Jordan Lawlar, a high school shortstop taken two slots after Marcelo Mayer in the 2021 draft, is expected to make his MLB debut Thursday for the Arizona Diamondbacks:

The hit rate sucks for all MLB draft picks. The issue is that pitchers are a much volatile commodity as they have a higher injury risk even if you hit on the pick.

They weren't mad at the actual pick, just the actual CBO who wouldn't trade any of his other 75 SS prospects in a deal for an authentic MLB pitcher.

That dream just didn't make sense.

Cool!

I remember the argument between Lawlar and Mayer. There were many who thought Lawlar was as good as Mayer.

Marcelo might be right there with him or close to it if it wasn't for his injuries. I think it may be more realistic to expect him in early 2025 now.

Lawler was the Sox initial target, but Mayer was perceived to be the number 1 pick. Either way, it's a crapshoot. Not sure why Lawlar had to be brought up.

Which ones? When I looked at the trade deadline, it didn't look like the pitchers that would have helped us would have been traded for the SS prospects that we had.

I don't get how TBR gets Civale for a 1Bman with a .780 AAA OPS.

I have Teel at the top. Most important regular position on the diamond. Best catcher in this year's draft.

A 1.72 pop time throwing out baserunners trying to steal; Realmuto leads the majors with 1.82...

And Teel can hit...played on three teams at three levels so far this summer... with an overall batting average of .368, OPS .941.

I debated flipping Teel & Anthony.

I had a hard time figuring Bleis, Romero and Drohan.
