If the Phillies happen to win the world series can we really say they were the best team in the league this year? I miss the old playoff format with the 3 division winners and ONE wild card.

Congratulations Phillies. And congratulations Dave Dombrowski. Looks like one of his best moves ever was replacing Girardi in-season.

After playing to a near draw over the previous eight years, this season AL East teams dominated AL West teams with an 89-66 record in the regular season.

In the postseason the AL East went 0-6 against the the AL West.

The postseason is a crap shoot, but the Houston Astros may well have the league's best team.

Dombro's made a lot of moves in two years in Philly. It's what he does. Signing Schwarber and Castellanos may be the high profile guys, but DD has been relentless in building a bullpen of established relievers, signing Alvarado, Hand, Knebel, and trading for Robertson (and giving Bellatti and Nelson a shot). He also dealt for starters Gibson and Thor, and got Marsh for CF.

Of course, all these additions come after the Phils invested large for MVP Harper, CY Young Wheeler and All-Star catcher Realmuto.

Bet there's not a lot of Philadelphia fans on forums today complaining about the future of the farm.

Honest question: did he trade away a lot of the farm?

Looks like mostly lower level guys. Gave up a power hitting catcher for Marsh, but a 23rd rounder and a position of strength with Realmuto around.

Philly has done some serious spending the past four years and Dombro did his job to round out the roster. Their 87 wins isn't a great accomplishment, but it bought them a ticket to the dance contest, where the lowest seed is now the hottest.

Kinda begs the question on why would they be complaining about the farm, if DD barely touched it?

The postseason is not a crapshoot.

The postseason has elements of a crapshoot.

Not according to our Bible (Fangraphs).

I can definitely live with a Houston-Philly World Series.

No Yankees

No Dodgers

No Rays

No Jays

Of the 4 remaining teams, this was the preferred outcome I guess. SD just needs to trade Machado and I do like to root against teams that go all in at the deadline.

Dave Drombrosky is a winner man. All his teams were always contenders. Happy for him and the Phillies who have a hell of an offense.

But just think of all that money tied up in stars, with few funds left to sign future draft picks and international prospects and pay for good scouts...

As I've always said, I'm fine going all in, when the window is open. I do think DD went a bit overboard, but the results negated the long term negative impact, IMO.

The Phillies are in the WS. Already, it has been worth any sacrifices he made to the future. The bigger point is that he has not significantly hurt the farm by getting them there.

The Castellenos deal may look bad, right now, but it was $100M/5 not $210M/7 like Price. Schwarber got $79M/4 not the $145M/5 Sale got. There is "large and long" and then there is larger and longer.

He inherited some other bloated contracts, but he's getting production from all of them- Harper, Realmuto & Wheeler. Something DD was not getting from HRam and Pablo, when he took over BOS or what Bloom was getting from some of the big contracts he was handed.

6 straight ALCS by the Astros.

4 of 6 WS appearances by the Astros.

They let Springer go.

They let Cole go.

They let Correa go.

They let lessers but still productive or semi-productive Morton, Keuchel, Greinke and McHugh go, too.

They have survived quite well, but I don’t believe the Red Sox could do the same if Betts, Bogey, and Raffy are let go.

They traded for Yordan Alvarez, who was a prospect for 3 years before being called up.

They replaced Springer with Tucker from their farm (drafted in 2015).

They replaced Correa with Pena from the farm (drafted in 2018).

We could not replace Betts, Bogey and Devers from our farm, because it was so weak. That has been a major problem with this team.

They have signed some big FA contracts- mostly on short term deals. They extended Bregman and Altuve.

Amazingly, at one point this season, the Astros went to a 6 man rotation and all 6 were homegrown pitchers. Tell me again, how injuries are a bigger factor for our predicament than our lousy farm from mis 2017 to late 2020.

GS 2022

31 Framber Valdez

28 Jose Urquidy

28 Luis Garcia

28 Verlander

25 Cristian Javier

12 Jake Odorizzi (traded away- mid season)

8 Lance McCullers Jr.

2 Hunter Brown

As great as the Astros have done, they have to win this World Series to really validate it. As of now they only have the 2017 title, which many look on as tainted.

The Astros have had an excellent team for quite a while . No doubt they will be favored to win the Series. But there is always the crapshoot factor.

They really want to get that monkey off their backs.

They talk about it a lot, down here, and of course they think everyone is overblowing the whole situation.

It would be a much smaller number to say who wasn’t injured, or who actually produced this year would it not? That was a big big factor this year for the lack of success.

Yes, I acknowledged the injuries of 2022 season were a major factor- maybe even more than the poor farm and tight budget that loosened up in March with the Story signing.

I was talking about 2019-2022, but your point about 2022 is spot on.

Every starter in their six-man rotation is better than every Red Sox starter. And it's arguably the same in the bullpen.

The Red Sox have a ways to go before they can contend with Houston.
