The surprise is that these guys are holding out for deals that aren't going to materialize. I guess they'll just sit out for a while?

I think someone mentioned Andrus may retire, but a few million is quite an incentive.

I think for some - especially the pitchers - the strategy is to see who gets injured in spring training…

Pretty risky, but you know some team in the hunt for a ring with budget space will come knocking, once a starter goes down hurt.

(Note: there is still team with their starting SS about to be placed on the 60 and a rehabbing guy named Mondesi as the only real middle IF depth on their 40 man roster.)

Remember when Al Kaline refused a $10K raise because he only hit .278 with 16 HRs and 71 RBI? He insisted on playing the 1971 season for $90,000.

Hey, look -- JD Martinez batted .274 with 16 HRs and 62 RBI... no wonder he accepted a paycut of $10 MILLION. He'll be DHing for LA for only $10 MILLION.

Btw: Kaline hit .294 the next year, felt he earned his raise, and finally accepted the extra $10K.

And that might be another factor. Maybe when teams can place players on the 60 day Injured List, they’ll start signing again…

They shoulda given him $20K.

Missing ST'ing is a big setback for these guys, though.

Sixty five years ago today, the immortal Ted Williams , The Splendid Splinter , signed a contract with the Red Sox for $ 135,000. At that time, it made him the highest paid player in MLB history. Things have changed a bit since then.

He's used to making like 15M a year. Maybe it's not worth taking the pay cut?

That doesn't mean a multiple year offer will materialize though.

I'd think making $1M more would be worth it, and he should make $5m+, maybe more on a one year deal.

Maybe he just wants to spend time at home with the kids…

Far from it!!

But it’s steady work at good pay and you don’t have to do any heavy lifting…

He’s made more money than 99.9% of people will make in their lifetimes. Maybe he’s ready to take it easy unless the money is really worthwhile?

For Wacha and Profar, I can see why they want to hold out for the best offer. Andrus has already received a big contract in his career.

I (obviously) don’t know Elvis Andrus, but per B-R he has made well over $130mill in his career, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he had a price and anything less, he stays home with the family…

That's what I'm thinking. Sounds amazing to us, but 4M to him might not be worth it to give up his spring/summer/fall with his kids.

It’s his Laffer’s Curve for when it becomes worthwhile to work…

Cristian Javier signs 5 year extension with Astros for $64M.

Dodgers sign Peralta for $6.5M plus incentives.

Cubs sign Fulmer.

The only thing worse than being separated from family is spending 24/7 with them.

Wait. Are Elvis’ kids teenagers?

If so, a one year league min deal might work. Maybe not today, but in time…

We are about $22M under the line. We should do it.

Fulmer is off the boards, so why not solidify our weakest area- up the middle?

Kike plays 2B and is free to play CF, more often. If Yoshida, Duvall, Dugo, Casas, or Turner get hurt or need a rest, we can shuffle Kike to CF.

Arroyo and Mondesi become 2 very nice bench pieces- better than several teams' starters. If Mondesi rakes, we could even platoon Duvall and Dugo.

Shoring up the middle infield could also be done with a Duran trade. Either a SS (Mateo?) or a 2b (Nick Madrigal?) works for both teams.

Then use Story’s vacated 40 man spot for RHRP Alex Reyes, who can be a huge difference maker in healthy. Andrew Chafin would be the second choice if Reyes isn’t healthy (which is very possible, as St.Louis non-tendered him for a reason)…

I've suggested those trades on BTV. I guess it would depend on how much other GMs value Duran. I'd even give up more than Duran.

I think Mateo has 3 years of control.

Khalil Lee passed through waivers. To those who thought we should have gotten him in the Beni trade, instead of others, it appears he'd have been no better.

Lee has done nothing in MLB so far, but we’re talking about a whipping 20 plate appearances. I imagine his recent domestic issues were a factor in his passing through waivers unclaimed.

Still I’d rather have the pitcher, even if he’s probably just a RP…

I'm sticking with the best deal being Dugo & Maeda.
