Yes, I know, but he's 34, now. Like I said, he should be okay.

He was 0 DRS in 2022 in CF with a -1.4 UZR/150.

He's better than anyone else on CF D on the team not named Kike.

I'm more worried about LF, RF, OF depth and 2B.

99% of Duvall's remaining CF innings came in 2021. It's not like it's ancient history we are looking back on.

Probably a perspicacious observation...

Maybe. But it will garner more support if we acquire one of the shortstops I mentioned…

I’m not going to say Duvall will be fine, but I don’t think he’s the defensive weak link on this team…

So… DFA Duran now?

They have their speedy CF who doesn’t need a 40 man roster spot…

Tapia career innings:

LF 2,587

CF 439

RF 460

I think he's a step down from Kiké, but I agree.

I'm not complaining about his D, but we look to have stepped down on D at every OF slot from 2022.

LF: Dugo/Pham> Yoshida

CF: Kike> Duvall

RF: JBJ> Dugo

We should be better at...

1B: Dalbec/Cordero/Hosmer> Casas/Turner

C: Vaz/Plawecki> McGuire/Wong

Sox have about 11 million left to spend before hitting the luxury tax. Now with the incentives in Duvalls deal that could potentially be 8 million (less with other incentives? not sure if they are included in the projected payroll of $221.88 MM).

I'm not sure they can sign a guy like Andrus or Iggy unless they're getting them on a 5 million dollar AAV. Maybe that happens, maybe a trade is still in the works.

MLBTR said the number was $17M. cots has $23M. Spotrac has $22M.

He bats left-handed, but his splits are not as extreme as Duran and Verdugo.

vs RHP

.812 Verdugo

.717 Tapia

.669 Duran

.634 Refsnyder (RHB) .792 in 2022 in 104 PAs

vs LHP

.728 Refsnyder (RHB) 1.005 in 2022 in 73 PAs

.684 Tapia

.680 Verdugo

.445 Duran

Iggy's last few contracts:

5M

3.5M

2.5M

2.5M

I don't think he'd break the bank. Andrus would be more expensive.

My guess is they spend less than 10M on MLB deals before ST starts.

Probably less than $7M.

No Andrus. Maybe Iggy and or Harrison.

Sox just signed catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor league deal.

@SPChrisHatfield

Red Sox MLFA Jorge Alfaro named MVP of the LIDOM championship series.

I was going with @redsoxpayroll on twitter who updated their number yesterday. You have to factor in promotions increasing that number too, Sox don't have much left to spend at all.

I thought these sources all factor in those added costs. Apparently some is estimated, as all have different numbers.

If the Red Sox wanted to dump salary before the season, or mid-season, some great trade candidates would be

Brasier is only 2M. That's not clearing much off the books.

Nobody would take Barnes' full contract right now. Sox are better off keeping him this season and letting him play out his deal.

Agreed. I think he'll have a nice year.

We could trade him for an over-priced SS or 2Bman, though.

No. Barnes will be good this year.

Trading Pivetta would be madness IMO. We're going to need his innings.

Im not saying we should, he’s just movable, and clears money.

Barnes

Yes, Barnes is perfect for my list. I can’t believe I omitted him.

I’m not saying we trade ANY of these guys but under certain circumstances it makes sense to move them, and they’re guys you can move to save you money. Devers is omitted.

Let’s take Barnes for example. Let’s say he has a good season and is looking like his old self. You can move him for a return and clear out a decent amount of money. If the team is doing poorly this makes perfect sense. It doesn’t make as much sense of you’re in contention, unless the bullpen is VERY good and stocked this year and you can trade Barnes for something you need.

How much over were we last year?

What did they do about it last year? They were over before they started the season. They are under now. Are they going to add more?

Depends.

The Sox could deal Barnes ($10.6mill including buyout) for Paul DeJong ($9mill) and fill their shortstop void, which then fills the second base void when Kike flips over to the other side of the diamond.

But given Barnes’ strong finish, should they?
