The problem is that everyone believes that they themselves are the ones being rational.

It must be easy for you, the perfect fan, to continue to make perfect posts.

Or Boggy and possibly Devers. It make no sense to trade what it would take to obtain and then sign Soto. But I swear if they let Devers walk over money I will be royally pissed.

Me, too. Coming after losing Betts & Bogey will compound my misery.

No, because I am the perfect fan, it's actually very easy to make perfect posts. I thought that'd be obvious.

Yes they are! Best team I have seen play this season.

If they pick up Benintendi, they become that much more scarier.

It’s going to have to be “all hands on deck” every time we play them for the rest of this season.

Ps: It would be better if two of those hands in our future lineup belonged to Soto!

IMO, the reason for picking up reinforcements has more to do with being able to finish out the regular season strong than it has to do with winning in the postseason. The postseason is too much of a crapshoot. The Yankees are all but certain to win the division, so whoever they pick up to finish this season doesn't really have on impact on me. Will it really matter whether the Yankees win 110 games versus winning 111 games? The postseason is too much of a crapshoot.

For the Sox, winning 1 or 2 extra games could very well be the difference between playoffs or not. Soto would be nice, but it's not happening.

Why trade the world to get him and then pay him what we wouldn’t pay Betts?

And probably won't pay Devers.

I'm not convinced this team has totally sworn off large and long deals, forever.

I see the logic in that philosophy, but sometimes biting the bullet is needed.

To me, if it's not for Devers, I can't see it being anyone else, at least for a while.

I'm wondering if the Story deal is as large and long as they dare go.

So you'll top out at a Story rather than a Devers or Betts? Yuck!

Not me. I'd sign Devers forevers, but I'm not sure this management team will ever go larger and longer than about what Story got.

They did offer Betts a ton, so who knows.

I think we need to "bite the bullet" once or twice a decade. As much as I knew the Price deal was too large and way too long, I felt it was needed, at that time.

I feel like, this coming winter will be a time like Price's was.

I suppose we could go with 2-3 Story type deals or $20-24M x 4-5 year deals, but I don't see a stud coming out of the minors anytime, soon, so a big one may be needed.

I was just asking for thrice: Devers/Xander/Betts. I guess Xander/Devers is the compromise. I'll shut up forever about Betts if they keep both.

I guess we are destined to an eternity of MVP griping.

I’m hoping on Devers but I expect Xander will sign before December.

I do question if they will be able to keep both…

I think Bogey walks and it's 50-50 on Devers.

It would have been worse if they signed Semien.

If they let Xander go, they need to extend Raffy.

If they let Raffy go, there will be extended griping and/or sadness from me.

Why? They are the Boston Red Sox. They should be able to keep both of them. They aren't hurting for cash. It's whether they want to or not. It's not if they are "able to."

I agree, but I don’t think JH does, and he has a tighter grip on his wallet than he used to. Bloom wasn’t brought to Boston to play Let’s Make A Deal.

I agree, ability to pay it is not the issue.

He was brought in to turn the Red Sox into the Dodgers, a sustainable top of the line organization that has a large budget and great farm system. When you have a high budget, you still have room for large contracts. You just use your farm to supplement your other holes rather than $$$ on middling FA talent like Diekman and other dreck.

Dreckman it is.

I think the Sox budget will remain a top 3-5 one going forward, so the ability to sign large and long contracts is certainly present.

I'm wondering, if we don't go large and longer than a Story type deal in the next few years, whether that comes more from Henry or Bloom. Maybe a joint decision.

Again, the philosophy looks pretty logical on paper, as most LnL contracts do not work out for the team, but losing Betts, Bogey and Devers within a 4-5 year period is just too overwhelming for most fans to handle and explain away with so-called "logic."

Winning a ring in the next few years would make us forget Betts more easily, and I suppose the same could be said after we lose Bogey and/or Devers, but it's hard to swallow, as a fan, until the ring is won.

Out of curiosity, I have to ask what you think is a fair contract for Devers?

Handing the pen and the contract over to Devers.

BTV accepted these deals:

Jimenez + Groome for Bell (Sox overpay)

Downs + Groome for Bell (Sox overpay)

Jordan & Bonaci for Abreu

Downs, Groome & Decker for Abreu

Groome for Mancini

Jimenez for Mancini

Seabold for Mancini

Jimenez + Cannon for Cron

I'd do Groome and Downs for Bell.

I'd do Groome, Downs and Decker for Abreu

I like my Downs/Decker trade for Cron better

I'm just thinking, if Bogey goes, we might want to hold all our middle IF prospects. (Our OF depth is weaker, though.)
