Downs strikes out a lot, but the walks are encouraging. He has 24 K's and 9 BB's. BA is .235 but OBP is a respectable .350.

I'm not sure the OBP will be sustainable in the bigs, but it's nice seeing him improve in that area.

What? No tater for Bello?

Explosion of taters on Portland today.

Castellanos with a grand tater, his first of the year.

Cottam with his first off the year.

Koss with us 2nd tater of the year.

Potts with his 3rd tater of the year.

I hope this season doesn't quickly turn into one where we end up caring about the farm more than the big club. There sure is a lot to be excited about, and at every level on the farm.

Will some of the very promising prospects be promoted earlier than expected?

Erro with his first tater of the season.

McDonough with his 3rd tater of the season.

Binelas with his sixth tater of the season and only one strike out.

@SoxProspects

AJ Politi slammed the door and picked up his first save of the year with 1.1 perfect innings and a pair of strikeouts. The 25-year-old righty has 12 strikeouts over 5.1 scoreless innings and a 0.18 WHIP.

@hopspitching

Advanced numbers to begin ‘22 for

@APoliti6

: 12Ks 0bb in 5.1ip, 60% strikeout rate, 46.8% whiff rate, .116 wOBA

One of our main points of emphasis this off-season was to develop a deeper understanding of what intended locations would produce the best expected results.

The Politi/German combo is holding up well for the Portland pen.

Bello, Walter, Winkleman and then the cupboard is pretty bare on the pitching side.

I think Groome will still make it at the back end of some MLB rotation. Maybe not ours.

You also forgot the other W, Winckowski. I'd put him up with the 3 you mentioned.

Mata and Ward are question marks coming off surgery. Murphy is probably a bullpen arm.

When is the last time we've had 4 pitching prospects with good outlooks and another 4 that might turn out okay, if they can get over injuries and military service time?

2020 had preinjury Mata, preinjury Ward, Song, Houck, Aldo Ramirez and Groome.

2013 had Owens, De La Rosa, Webster, Ranaudo, Workman and Barnes. We know how it turned out, but those were some decent prospects.

2006 was the peak of Papelbon, Lester, Hansen, Delcarmen, Buchholz, Bowden, Alvarez.

I'd say this crop matches 2013 and 2006 looks like the point where we look to as being the last time we had better. Just my opinion.

Preinjury Mata (1.75 ERA, 1.09 WHIP in High A previous year) and Ward (2.14 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) with Song just pitching in Lowell the previous season (1.06 ERA, 0.88 WHIP) had the higher ceiling IMO.

Good points, but we still have Mata and Ward as prospects, despite their ceiling being lower, now. Song, too.

These surgeries have had better results over the years.
