Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

I heard from reliable sources the Red Sox are interested.

Does reliable actually mean liable to be libel, over and over again? Or to lie once more?

Out of curiosity: Who are your reliable sources?

Sean McAdams reported that a "major league source" said the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays were the most aggressive in pursuit of Seiya Suzuki.

What is a "major league source"?

More importantly, who would be in the best position to say what teams have been most aggressive? A source with the league? Or the player's agent, reportedly Joel Wolfe?

Absent collusion, a source with the league would be less reliable. The agent would know the suitors.

If an agent tells a team executive that the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays are aggressive, does that team executive become a "major league source" who is reliable? What would be the agent's motivation in making that claim? What would be the baseball executive's motivation is passing that comment on to a beat reporter such as Sean McAdams?

During the lockout the baseball media are scrambling for "hits" on their websites and the information shared may be even less than reliable than usual.

Or not.

Did they say that out did they report MLB saying it?

It was not MLB. MLBTR ran with a headline saying it was "Cancelled" and when reading it... "Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports that it has been canceled."

I just believe beat reporters who are closer to the pulse of the team they cover than anyone else on the internet. So my personal opinions of guys like Alex Speier, Pete Abraham, Rob Bradford, John Tomase, Peter Gammons, etc. aren't a factor. Same with a national guy like Ken Rosenthal, who is always working and knows everybody. Whether you like him or not, he's more credible than most.

You're right, there are no reliable sources. It's arguable the very term is a misnomer; otherwise, why is someone afraid his name will be used? It's not like any of these reporters, team employees and player agents are at risk of having to go into the witness protection program... or are they? Some may risk their jobs, whether through being fired for spilling the beans, blackballed for breaking trust and thus, losing future scoops, or just from fabricating or feeding misinformation campaigns (oops, that's ok with half the country these days). Some are certainly being used as pawns by both sides of management and labor, but that comes with the badge...

That problem is not limited to the sports media.

Good points.

The headline should have mentioned it was a quote NOT from MLB.

I still trust them. I don’t expect 100% accuracy from any sort, but I give them credit because they put the word “rumors” right there in their title…

Also I suppose I should be considered accurate on some level, since I’m usually in the neighborhood of being 100% incorrect…

The fun of baseball has been cancelled for a while, that's for sure...

It’s really very frustrating. Baseball is the one sport where the off-season is still pretty exciting most years. All it has me wondering now is, was the old CBA really so unfair? And to whom?

Players took a little beating last time around.

Indeed.

I think the players are viewing this time as the time for catching up from the last one plus moderate gains beyond that.

The owners will cling to their secrecy of profits and push to keep them maximized.

If the owners put their fingers in the air, they'd realize that locking out the players does more harm than good with these negotiations. They should have just temporarily extended the terms of the previous CBA and continued on with the offseason.

Where's the fun in that?

@BeyondtheMnstr

The Red Sox are one of a few teams interested in signing free agent lefty Carlos Rodon

Yeah, they’re just living in shacks…

Now there is a non sequitur!

I thought I was the only one that used those..............................

If we got Suzuki and Rodon, we'd be over the tax line, unless we trade someone expensive, and we'd be keeping Houck & Whitlock in the pen, at least to start the season.

Interesting fodder.

Rodon is interesting on a short term deal. They could always go under next year if they wanted to reset again. Xander is opting out. JD will be gone.

I can see the Sox justifying a high, short AAV to a pitcher rather than a position player -- the only regulars making over $10 Mil per were all signed by other GMs/CBOs...

If the players got such a raw deal on the last CBA, it does make zero sense for the owners to enforce a lockout…

Zero sense? really?

Like owners could never be greedy batsards.

Ownership is just trying to strongarm the union. Sign a bunch of contracts ahead of negotiations then just pull the rug out from under everyone. See, what we are willing to give we can freely take away.

I'm just not sure it's a tactic that will work. We haven't really heard much from MLBPA since the lockout, but I'm sure they were prepared for it.

It was just to show the players that the owners are the ones in charge. They can do whatever they want. They could cancel a whole season if they felt like it. Unfortunately, too many fans will always stan for ownership since those ballplayers make too damn much!

Both owners and players are terrible negotiators.

I'm an equal opportunity abuser.

I have no respect for Tony Clark. MLBPA should have found someone better.

IMHO this situation is entirely on the owners. It takes a lot of arrogance for owners to sign some players to multi-million dollar contracts and then lock the players out under the guise of "We're not making enough money".
