Rockies, DBags and Padres are all below .500. But that's a tougher division I guess.

What a collapse by the Padres!

Half of Seattle's negative 48 run differential can be traced to the Padres' three-game sweep in May when the Mariners were outscored 31-7.

I think harmony is stuck on the idea the Padres are still a good team.

Also, maybe the NLW is so good, because they got to mop up on the ALW.

The Mariners also have a big homefield advantage due to the excessive travel it takes to get there.

Uh, the Mariners have the significant disadvantage of traveling to 81 games on the road, easily the most strenuous travel schedule in baseball:

The Mariners and other West Coast teams also deal with rainout makeup games east of the Rockies while West Coast games are almost never rained out.

Do they not have a homefield advantage though?

Any homefield advantage is outweighed by the homefield disadvantage on road games.

Then move the team to Indianapolis.

Does missing a couple hours of sleep a few times a year really matter much?

The top four teams in the AL East have a 54-23 record in interleague play against the NL East (with three games remaining) while the top four teams in the AL West have a 40-40 record against the far tougher NL West.

There's the difference in overall wins.

Overall the AL East is 61-36 against the NL East while the AL West is 47-53 against the NL West.

The myth is that the Big Bad American League East is a dominant division. The AL East is among several competitive divisions in baseball.

Major League Baseball is a big business and it's hard to dispute that the AL East is a major revenue generator in that big business. As a result, Major League Baseball and the baseball media pander to the AL East. Those solid business decisions may lead to a public misperception about the comparative strength of the AL East. The numbers, however, suggest relative parity on the field.

Let's enjoy the final days of the 2021 regular season.

There’s been parity in baseball for decades. Roughly every team finishes winning between 40% and 60% of their games, and the only differences

But the stupidest myth in sports is the “East Coast Bias”, largely spread by midwestern and west coast fans who watch ESPN present those other teams first. How dare they!

Anyone who grew up on the East Coast trying to stay up and watch Monday Night Football often go well past midnight and then try to make it to school or work the next day knows how ridiculous that notion is….

Well, one of the reasons the Rays lead the MLB in runs scored, and the Jays lead in HRs, and the Yankees lead in bases on balls, is because they all got to face Boston's pitching (and defense) 19 times each.

Love getting into some 1969 division alignment talk.

The reason the Reds were in the West was because the Cardinals and Cubs (both further west than the Reds) lobbied to be in the same division with the Mets and Phillies. This is why the Braves and Reds were pushed to the West. There were concerns about inequity if the Cards, Cubs and Giants were all in the same division.

Gotta give credit to Cincy leading the big leagues in wins in the Seventies, while constantly having to adjust to three hour time changes every other week going back and forth to LA, SF, SD, even Hou (one-hour diff?). Must've sucked to be a fan trying to stay awake listening to all those late games on the radio.

How many times a year, do the M's get to their hotel with only time to get less than 8 hours of sleep?

Way less than parents with screaming children or crying babies.

BTW, our daughter just moved out, last month. She oten woke us at 3 or 4 in the morning, as our dogs barked every time she came in late.

If you said “nullified” or “countered”, I might agree. But to overtly state it’s “outweighed” requires some sort of support. Why is it you think travel affects Seattle more so than other teams, especially those not as accustomed?

The Braves used to be in the West, too. That's even father away.

The total number of miles traveled each season.

The Mariners should not complain about playing in a division with two teams that are located closer to Boston than to Seattle but to suggest that the Mariners have a homefield advantage overlooks the disadvantages of the extensive travel schedule.

Again, no complaints.

There isn't an "East Coast" bias. It's a NY bias, since that's basically where ESPN is located.

ESPN and other media are big business that make solid business decisions to pander to the largest audiences. This West Coast fan is not offended by the fiscally justified bias.

There was a time in MLB when St Louis was the farthest west city. That changed in 1958.

@PeteAbe

Per MLB: The AL Wild Card Game on Tuesday will be at 8:08 p.m.

It's good that MLB makes these games too late for kids to watch.

My daughter is in bed at 7:45, my son at 8:30.

Not sure what you are getting at, but this is probably another one of your nonsensical posts.

The national media makes amends ... at least for one morning:):

I actually just copied and pasted your earlier post, so yes, nonsensical.

And I ignored your original response because you equated living with children to living with an adult that comes home at 4am.

Umm, my adult child was once a young child. It wasn't just recently, we were woken up late. You just assumed that's all I was talking about.

I never equated the two. I was pointing out that I had a child.

Also, you did not ignore it.

I do know many kids stay up to watch late games, and they and their parents deal with the consequences of those children without enough sleep. I'm also a teacher who experiences those effects everyday. Not all parents get their kids to bed at set times. I applaud you doing so.

I'm not sure why you seem to want to pick a fight over nothing.

Well maybe your kids would get more excited about it if you told them this was a POSTSEASON game…
