Rike Hernandez CF (!)

Devers 3B

JD Martinez DH

Bogaerts SS

Renfroe RF

Verdugo LF

Vazquez C

Dalbec 1B

Arauz 2B

A lot of familiar faces with Arauz a bit of a surprise, but last night, against a lefty (which he will also face tonight), he fielded well at 3B and got 2 hits.

Roster moves:

Davis and Robles have been activated.

Wong optioned to Worcester

Darwinzon Hernandez to the 10 day IL with a right oblique strain.

That last one could hurt. Dhern has been really solid in the 6th-7th inning relief role, and obliques can take a while to heal fully, which for a pitcher it has to before they should return. It's not a phantom stint, he's been pitching pretty well.

Who will step up tonight and make something good happen, maybe play with the lead for once, get a key hit, JDM actually strike a fair ball hard, EO throws a 9 inning 70 pitch shutout ? Someone please make a play and a difference

Thank you JDM and especially Bogaerts for the lead

I like the way our starters use the first inning to complete their getting loose routine, 3K's after a killer 2 run homer. Oh well if he shuts them out for the next 8 innings , it's a win

Dalbec has gone 61 AB without a homer. 0 for in July.

If he doesn't hit homers, he's absolutely worthless.

Don't blame the starter. Blame that idiot Vazquez who kept calling for the fastballs. Finally, after the first two hitters get a double and a dinger, he calls for the splitter. I have never liked Vazquez, but this year find him especially irritating because he does not catch pitchers very well--leads MLB in passed balls and gives up too many wild pitches--because he is constantly gambling on the basepaths and making outs at the wrong time, because he is getting fatter, and because he gets to share in the blame for the lousing pitching recently.

Back to those fastballs. Time and again this season we have seen Eovaldi's fastball--even when it comes in at 100 mph--get hammered, which is why he finally started mixing up his pitches, including adding that splitter which works great, and throwing fewer fastballs.

I've been a fan of Dugo since the SOX acquired him, but now I'm thinking that maybe the SOX do need a LF who can hit for power.

Does he get so emotional that the highs are being overcome by the lows. I think he shows it all too much and suffers from manic-depression

I don't disagree, the Bloom is off Vaz's bush as a go forward certainty for this team. Do we have him signed for 1 or 2 more years ?

Once that idiot Vazquez stopped calling for fastball after fastball, what happens?

Six straight outs, that's what happens.

Cora may think Vazquez is fantastic, but I sure don't.

A little interesting that Chavis disappeared with virtually no comment. One more of a virtual entire team of AAA top prospects from our system that flamed out in the bright lights of Fenway. Or maybe they were not well prepared in Pawtucket and lower leagues, which is why Worcester exists now

It used to be more common in MLB that the pitches were being called from the dugout as the catcher looked over. Maybe Vaz needs to relinquish pitch calling. It is common for Sox pitchers for multiple years to struggle some in the first inning

Just because I feel like picking on him, this is now two games in a row in which Vazquez has done his level best to help the Rays. Today it was calling for meatballs so the Rays could quickly cut the lead to 3-2. Last night in the middle of a big rally, Vazquez tries to go to 2b on a single and is out by a freaking mile. He runs the bases like he is invisible and the defense can't actually see the dumb things he does.
