I'm not ready to say Marwin has been a bad signing. He is one of those flexible players that is an experienced MLer. He may well hit better as the season progresses The signs are there.

And Marwin is capable of delivering some timely hits. Just ask the Yankees.

Saying Bloom is 4 for 7 or whatever doesn't really work. Our W-L record and quality of play is much better than expected. He turned the team around in a hurry. Fantastic job.

Plus, the 4 for 7 doesn't take into account the Pivetta and Ottavino trades, the Arroyo waiver pick-up and the Plawecki signing, which some were pre 2020 winter deals.

Richards

Perez

Whitlock

Renfroe

Arroyo

Ottavino

Plawecki

Valdez

Sawamura

Kike

Marwin

Andriese

Santana

Cordero & Co.

A mess of prospects

Then, there is Verdugo & Co.

All-in-all, even not taking budget constraints into context, he's done one hell of a job!

They punted a season that was only 60 games long that fans couldn't attend. The very next year, they were at or near the top of the division for the first third of the season and are still looking like playoff contenders. Many people were saying "if everything breaks right, they'll be an 88 win team." Looks like they are better than that?

The point was he did pretty well with his free agent signings, and whatever criteria he used to pick Enrique Hernandez is probably very similar in methodology to how he also went after Renfroe, Perez, Sawamura, Richards, etc. And despite the hiccup that is Kike, overall whatever he is doing to evaluate free agents is clearly working...

We're on pace for 100 wins.

5 games ago, we were on pace for 94.

Kike may still prove to be an okay signing, especially in light of how badly many other top 2B options are doing, so far this year.

And Kike is fine at his price tag. 0.5 fWAR 0.8 bWAR

Maybe people aren't realizing how bad replacement value is, this year.

The whole league is hitting worse than any year since 1968. (Correct me, if I'm wrong, but it seems that way.)

It's all about context and how much better you are that the other teams, especially the other top contenders.

Every team has multiple black holes, but much of what we hear is, "We can't win with 3 black holes!"

His price tag is fine, he should just not be an everyday player.

Even that is debatable. Every team has guys who are not going to end up at 3 WAR or more. Kike should end up around 2, which would make him an MLB average player.

His current trajectory is less than 1.5 WAR, but ok. He can be an everyday player in MLB, I'd just rather BOS not have to use him as an everyday player.

What he does is annoying. You're enjoying the game and how well the team is playing, and all of a sudden one of Ghost's foolish 'Dump whoever' threads pops up. He's an unfunny clown.

I tried to explain that to him. Reason with him. But he ghosted me. I guess that's what ghosts do.

Most FAs are "overpaid." It's the nature of the system.

Sure, we could have signed Brock Holt or others, but the most of us felt we needed to do something serious at 2B, and almost all the top FA choices have not done any better than Kike, and some cost more.

Plus, he's hasn't even crossed the 20% of his control year point, yet.

He's been sort of up and down his whole career, maybe he's due for an up swing, soon.

If the Sox signed Holt instead of Hernandez to start at 2b, even with Holt being a fan favorite, there would have been grumblings about Bloom being cheap and not going for the better player...

Exactly, although some viewed Kike as a utility player and not a FT 2Bman, but his recent numbers were better than several 2Bmen on the market.

Other serious options included:

15 x 6 LeMahieu (.656 in 251 PAs)

7 x 4 H-S Kim (.585 in 156)

7 x 3 Profar (.614 in 211)

9 x 2 K Wong (.784 in 178)

6.3 x 3 La Stella (.650 in 75)

7 x 2 Kike (.654 in 184)

5 x 1 Cesar Hernandez (.684 in 245)

Only Kolten Wong is doing much better, and it's doubtful he'd have made a big difference. Plus, the $2M more might have kept us from signing Sawamura.

And, Wong does not play OF.

Almost all the free agents that I wanted the Sox to sign are disappointments for their new clubs. The only guys having decent years are Semien and Marisnick.

Brad Hand hasn't been a disaster for Washington... but we all have to like Hiro Sawamura at about a tenth of the cost.

If I was GM, I'd be wearing a gorilla suit and stowing away on a ship to a desert island by now.

I was for Marisnick from day one, but not because I thought he was the best choice or that he'd have a good year. I wanted him for his low contract, good D, and hoping we could use the money saved on someone like Odorizzi or a closer.

I thought Semien was too expensive for this year's situation.

It's a reason that you can't always rely on FA to build your ballclub. Need to draft and develop players too.

I’ve read the opposite on this board as well...

Promote Franchy!

1.201/1.194 OPS Home/Away in WOO

He’s certainly making a strong case for another chance.

Santana is helping, too.

Strike while the iron is hot. Maybe he will stay hot in the majors for a little while and build some confidence. Santana needs to be discarded.

@Jared_Carrabis

Since June 10, Bobby Dalbec is hitting .382 with a 1.227 OPS, which is the 8th best in MLB over those nine games.
