30 #1s in MLB, since there are 30 teams.

#42 would place him in about the middle rankings of all #2's. (31-60)

My assumption was that I'd ignore the bottom of the league which basically use #4's for their ace. I think he's a solid #3 on a competitive team.

Sox have the 2nd best record in MLB. The Bruins are 10th in points. C's are a Jekyll & Hyde team. They could run the table in the playoffs, but they aren't consistent enough.

Except the SOX have played less than 20% of the schedule and the BRUINS have clinched a PO spot. I'm not saying the BRUINS are gonna win the Cup; I'm just saying they have the best chance of a championship compared to the SOX and Celtics.

Agreed, but then again, he's two bad games from being a #5, again.

Also, Eovaldi and ERod are two bad games from having the numbers of a #3.

Can we wait for those bad games until we have to agree with Splinter?

IDK. I thought all along the Sox were an 86 win team. They have an outside shot at getting a WC birth. Anything can happen once they get in. If Sale and ERod are both healthy, this team could make a good run. Also, I think this team will look much more complete once Downs and Duran arrive. If Casas is hitting like Devers in AA, he'll be slotted in at 1B. The lineup could get very dangerous towards the end of the year.

I believe Richards has a better shot of having a very good year than Pivetta, but being a SOX fan, I hope they both have very good seasons.

Agreed. Right from the start, I felt Pivetta was ahead of Perez, which isn't saying much.

This is his 14th season in Detroit, during which he has been paid over $320M to play baseball. By a team in a city which has been losing population and experiencing urban decay throughout those 14 years. This is madness. Cabrera is not the culprit, but MLB and the MLBPA certainly are.

Wonder if anyone is still there to remember when Al Kaline refused a pay raise one season at the end of his career because he didn't feel like he deserved it.

I remember it. I also remember when he got to the Majors.

Yup, you're right.

Detroit isn't terrible.

Pivetta is better than a #5.

Dalbec is a threat against RH pitching.

The BP gives us all confidence except a couple of guys.

How could I be so wrong?

Your overall point is fair.

That said, terrible in MLB is way different from terrible in the NBA or NFL or, I suspect, the NHL, which I don't follow. Why? Because the worst MLB teams can still win games. Right now the Tigers win a little better than 2.5 out of 10 games, which is pretty awful. The Sox have the 2d best winning percentage in MLB and win 6 out of 10 games. Odds are good that the Tigers can take 1 of 3 games vs. the Sox if only because the Sox cannot consistently win even 2 out of 3 games. Thus the Tigers had a shot last night when our BP imploded. Indeed, the Sox needed two minor miracles to win. Cabrera needed to hit into two GIDP's, the 2d one with the bases loaded and 1 out, and Barnes needed to get a super save with 5 straight outs and no runs scored--including Cabrera's GIDP in the top of the 8th.

The numbers say Pivetta is so far one of the Sox three best pitchers, but he could also fade faster than a Chris Sale in August.

I don't like Dalbec, but his success at U. Arizona, Portland (AA), Pawtucket (AAA), and Boston (one month last year) say I'm wrong.

The bullpen is beginning to look like the Disney version of Night On Bald Mountain. Scary.

If what you are doing is whining, I sure hope you keep it up because I'm the worst whiner and the scardest cat on talksox. ChickenLittle-like.

Sox are 8th in team ERA, 11th in WHIP for relievers.

The starters are 12th in team EAR, 19th in WHIP.

As for the offense, they are 4th in runs and 1st in OPS.

Both of your whining has put us in 1st, so I say keep it up!

They are 11th in team ERA- (fangraphs).

9th in xFIP-

All this, while our opps have a .311 BAbip vs us (29th in MLB)!

Our pen has the 6th best xFIP- at 91. The starters are 14 at 97.

Mets aren’t too good either and the games were close. Tigers have a solid pitcher up tonight. I think the score will be low. Maybe 2-1 type deal. We have struggles as of late with decent pitchers.

And so, of course we struggle to win a game in which we score 11 runs against the worst offense in the league.

Ugly, ugly game.

But a win is a win.

I thought 'whining' was something like blaming the ump or blaming the weather or whatever; I don't think whining is pointing out weaknesses on the team one roots for. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

I get a kick out of how the self-righteous Yankem fans are booing the hell out of the Astros. They must have forgotten that their clean-cut Yankems abused steroids more than any other team during that period in baseball. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Whining is analogous to griping, a wonderfully versatile verb. I usually don't gripe about umps or the weather, but often do about almost anything or anyone during games. I've tried to restrain myself this season because to date the Sox have been way better than expected.
