Red Sox selected Wyatt Olds.

Mets selected Wyatt Young.

Let's see which strategy works out.

Earp... that's a good one.

Those crazy bastards did it.

It couldn't be they though all those pitchers were the best players available.

This was a strategy.

Or as GW would say, "a stradgedy."

You have got to really hate your minor league pitching to draft all pitchers. They're going to have to put these guys on rosters which means that either 1/2 of them aren't signing or they're releasing a bunch of guys.

Maybe next year they draft 20 hitters.

Just hope Niko Kavadas signs. Looks like a left Napoli, but he could be our very own Rowdy Tellez...

I would be absolutely shocked if any of the top 10 picks don't sign. He's signing.

Kavadas is an 11th rounder, but he is also a college senior. He will sign for peanuts

College seniors rarely go unsigned unless the team has run out of budget room or the player just doesn't want to play baseball anymore.

Why would a guy like him last 11 rounds?

The guy is shaped like Pablo Sandoval, and he's not ever going to play 3B, he might not even play 1B that well. He's 1B/DH profile. He has to hit, and when he fell everyone was taking senior signs rounds 4-10.

He will get an above slot deal, in that the Sox will pay him north of $125,000. He probably gets around 225K-400K.

EDIT: probably closer to that 225 range.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, I believe Kavadas is eligible to return to college and play another year. So he has a little bit of leverage.

I stand corrected?

He wasn't redshirted. How does he have a 5th year of eligibility?

I do not know, but the reports I've read on him talks about him having the option of returning to school.

Many thought Kavadas would hear his name much sooner. He went into the draft as MLB.com’s No. 135 overall prospect. If Kavadas is not happy with what he's offered to sign for, he's eligible to return to Notre Dame for one more season.

He didn’t rule that possibility out with BlueandGold.com in an interview last week.

“Notre Dame is such a special place for me,” Kavadas said. “I would love to be able to come back and play a fifth year here and play for such a competitive program. If the right opportunity doesn’t present itself, it’s unbelievable I have the chance to come back and compete for a national championship with this brotherhood that we’ve developed over the last four years.”

Why does he have a 5th year of eligibility?

Ok, so it seems like the reduction to 5 MLB draft rounds last year combined with a COVID shortened 2020 season, caused NCAA to grant some extensions for certain players. This includes an additional year of eligibility as players were allowed to redshirt for 2020. I guess ND allowed Niko to redshirt for last year? This is the last year that any senior would be granted an extension due to COVID. Maybe this is why he fell to the 11th round? IDK.

I would assume that any true Talksox Notre Dame fans would have known this already.

It's why I said I hope he signs... with a name like that, and his one skill set, he'd be a fan favorite if he makes it.

Would you settle for Matt Stairs: career 23 oWAR, -17 dWAR?

If Niko comes out to Stone Cold's entrance music too, I'd allow it.

@jcmccaffrey

Red Sox director of amateur scouting Paul Toboni called Niko Kavadas' power 'top of the scale'. He thinks they can help Jud Fabian cut down his K-rate even further
