I could be wrong here, but I believe teams pretty much always spend their bonus pool, and in most cases go 5% above. I don’t think cash is an issue.

Personnel can be though, Bloom has a new boss that may have different influences. It’s also about the team of scouts feeding you information as well. The picks belong to those guys just as much as it does the GM….although they’ll never get the same level of credit externally.

I meant in terms of first round picks and under slotting.

For all we know, the Sox may underslot as much as the Rays, tonight.

Yes, but when teams go under slot it’s not because they can’t afford it. They want to spread that money around across other picks.

You could make a good argument for under slotting. You’re still going to get a guy with 1st round talent

True.

I guess I'm thinking poorer teams may try to spread the wealth more to improve their chances of finding more players not necessarily a few very good players.

I think the incentive to find very good players is the same. Poor team economics come into play when guys get close to free agency. Resigning guys to $300+ deals doesn’t make sense for them, but trading them away to replenish their systems do.

Yes, and I've stated over and over, I am very naïve in this area.

In about 2 hours, we'll know "our guy."

STORK sighting. There's one about every 6 months.

Make since, Rocker hasn’t been mocked to the Sox in about 6 months.

I didn't see that coming. I had Meyer as #1 with Leiter as #2 and Jobe as #3. I would have been happy with Davis as our pick, but Meyer is a tremendous talent and may hit the big leagues after a year or two at the most. Bogie is a great player for us and he may go or his skills find him better suited to 3rd or 2nd as he ages. Regardless, we got a premium talent.

Mayer isn’t coming up in a year or two. He’s a HS shortstop. Best case (and I’m talking fairy tale land) he spends two full seasons on the minors and he debuts some time mid 2024

Best case scenario he’s up in two years. Studs make it to the majors at 19-20, so that’s best case scenario. But yeah, even if he pans out I think 3-4 years is more realistic. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Mayer to the Sox. It’s a good pick for the Sox

Marcelo Mayer is the highest draft pick out of Eastlake High School, Chula Vista, California, since Adrian Gonzalez went No. 1 in 2000.

Last year the Minnesota Twins took Eastlake shortstop Keoni Cavaco with the No. 13 pick of the first round.

Mayer is the highest ranked hitter and fielder in the draft. A guy like that can have a future at any regular position.

Someday, Sox fans just may give thanks to Zach Godley, Matt Hall and Kyle Hart for 2020...

The crazy thing is winning at the end of last year and falling from 3-4. We thought we were tanking for Kumar. If the Sox were 3rd, they’d end up with Mayer anyways.

I actually like the Yankees pick. Two years in a row, that might be a record. I absolutely hate it when the Yanks pick position players who are "a sum of their parts" or great athletes who need the bat to develop. It never f***ing does. But, this Sweeney kid can mash. Lefty batter with line drive swing, should have good power at the next level. Drafted as a SS, but he will be a 3b long term.

Wow, the consensus first pick drops in our lap.

I guess we'll have to wait a while to see him, but this kid looks legit.

A left-handed hitting SS. WOW!

Defense and Offense.

Amazing. The night started off kind of depressing, with the Pirates taking Davis and the Rangers taking Leiter. At that point, I was certain the Tigers would take Mayer and that the worst case scenario would play out for the Red Sox with Davis, Leiter, and Mayer off the board. But then the Tigers took Jobe! YES! I think everyone knew that the Red Sox would follow up by taking Mayer. It is pretty incredible to think that the Red Sox ended up with the top prep SS and perhaps the best talent in the draft. I'm trying to figure out how this happened. It actually make sense: (1) the Pirates wanted a catcher and Davis will sign for under slot; (2) the Rangers have middle infielders throughout their system but no pitching and Leiter is great; (3) the Tigers fell for the seductive charm of a high school pitcher that blinded them to the reality of a high risk gamble.

Here is a link to some pretty good analysis on the first round:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2945787-2021-mlb-draft-picks-live-team-by-team-grades-and-analysis

First Round (No. 4 Overall): Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake High School (CA)

Mayer hit .410 with 13 home runs this spring playing in the extremely competitive San Diego area, and he has been on the MLB draft radar since his freshman season. With a 6'3”, 185-pound frame and a smooth left-handed stroke, he has been compared to Corey Seager, and he could provide a similar package of skills if everything clicks. He's not as athletic as Jordan Lawlar, but he's a more polished all-around player with a higher floor and an equally enticing ceiling.

Grade: A

I have a hunch the Red Sox would have preferred Leiter over anyone else in this class, but they should have no qualms settling for the player many considered to be the top all-around talent in the class. You can never have too much middle infield talent, so don't think twice about the fact that Xander Bogaerts is manning shortstop for the foreseeable future.

First Round (No. 3 Overall): Jackson Jobe, RHP, Heritage Hall High School (OK)

Jobe is the consensus No. 1 high school pitcher in the 2021 class. The 6'2", 190-pound right-hander is armed with a mid-90s fastball, a quality changeup, and a high-spin slider that is the best breaking pitch in the entire draft. There is not much physical projection left in his frame, but his present stuff is so good it doesn't matter. He could easily end up being the best pitcher in the class, but there is a long history of risk involved with drafting a prep right-hander.

Grade: C

I'm shocked the Tigers didn't jump at the opportunity to grab Marcelo Mayer. They were reportedly enamored with him throughout the predraft process and he fell into their laps, but instead they went with a high-risk, high-reward high school right-hander.
