I'm not sure how any MLB GM keeps his job without filling the SS position.

Did he not notice he had 2 2Bmen and no SS?

That's really reaching.

Not to defend the Yankees, but the outcome of a 1 run game is pretty random to begin with. When you get into extra innings and a team loses by that one run that started on 2nd base, that only adds to the randomness of the outcome. These games are more or less a 50-50 toss up.

Of course, I also hated the current college football overtime rules when they first went into effect. But over time, I have found they make the overtimes more exciting, probably because of the incredible ending to the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. I have my early doubts I will embrace these rules the same way, but sometimes all it takes is that one positive memory...

When I first heard about the runner on 2nd rule in extra innings, I really thought it was the stupidest idea that anyone every came up with. I still prefer not to have it, but I do think that it adds excitement, strategy, and urgency to the extra innings. That said, I'm a fan of the 18 inning marathon games.

And hey, let’s bring an opener in who is erratic while we have the starter sit back and wait for a lead to be given up? Great job Boone

Using a middle reliever to open, and against the Rays? Totally bizarre. This team is not being well managed.

The Yankees put it all together tonight. Great offense (1-18 (H-ABs) through 6 innings against the mighty Michael Wacha), amazing pitching (8 runs over 6 innings versus Arozarena & a bunch of scrubs), and superb defense (3 errors plus a bunch of infield singles that could have been outs).

I guess things can only get better. Unless we get no-hit tomorrow versus Glasnow.

For all the trash Yankee fans talk about the Sox farm, they don't seem to like using their own farm players. The only homegrown starters in the lineup are Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner, and Gardner came up 13 year ago...

Judge too, but good overall point. Yankees farm system = hyped.

I wish for one game we could have a full stadium just so the boos could rain down on this f***ing abysmal excuse of an offense

A Yankees fan in meltdown mode.

Yankees fans throwing things on the field while the Rays players were on the field is a terrible look. Their anger is misplaced. It's not the Rays they should be throwing things at, it's their own players. Not that I'm condoning that behavior, but you get my point.

As a Red Sox fan, I can't help but to appreciate Boone as your manager.

That said, I wonder how much of his decision making is coming down from the FO.

Great defense tonight as well

On a bright note for the Yankees, and this is sincere, Sanchez looked good behind the plate.

Yes, but as you say, it might be Cash making these decisions.

Nelson said afterward he was informed Thursday night he would be starting on Friday, and he had to remind himself how to prepare. You can't make this stuff up. It's reminiscent of the disaster against the Rays in the playoffs last year when they used Garcia as an opener and then Happ. And Happ afterward said he wasn't really in favor of the idea.

It smells like total systemic dysfunction.

As one Yankee fan said about using Nelson as an opener, "The Yankees try to copy what are other teams are doing and then they do it the wrong way."

I think that was stupid because to me, pitching isn't the problem with this team. Sure, it could definitely be better, but the pitching staff has been good enough so far to support a ball club that's as explosive offensively as most expected the Yankees to be. Assuming the offense eventually gets going, I think this rate of pitching will suffice

To date, Cole has been outstanding, Montgomery has been pretty good, the rest of the rotation has been awful. Their bullpen is fine.

Their offense is in a huge funk.

Their defense is an abomination.

Boom, yes. Some proof Boone completely missed he point.

The whole point of the "opener" was to use your better/best reliever against the opposing best hitters. That's why the Rays were using guys like Diego Castillo, Ryne Stanek and Sergio Romo in the role. The Yankees, with very good bullpen depth, still opt for the AAAA guy...

We always start slow and then seem to reach a rock bottom before rocketing back. Need to see that happen. The team looks dead and I think Boone has realized that he’s managing for his job now

Supposedly Boone went off on the team after yesterday's loss. We'll see if they respond this afternoon.

It's so hard to picture Boone going off.

I feel for Nelson too. The kid really should be a mop up guy with a slow ascension into higher leverage roles. He’s been thrown into big roles early on and he hasn’t responded. I’d also change the hell out of his arsenal. He cannot locate the sinker as it moves too much. He seems to be trying to throw it in the zone to such a degree that he sucks at keeping it out of the middle of the zone. I’d convert him to a 4 seamer/slider guy and see if his location ticks up. He’s chucking 98 with an 6” tail. He might sit or top 100 as a four seam thrower

So many head-scratching moves of all sorts. On defense, they have DJ, a second baseman, playing first, Torres, a second baseman, playing short, and Odor, who should be out of baseball, playing second.

LF- Frazier. The kid’s time has finally come. He mashed last year and showed very well defensively in the OF last year as a RFer (although very poorly in limited innings as a LFer). He’s pegged as the Yanks full time LFer and should finally have no hindrance to 500ABs.

My expected lineup

1. Lemahieu 2B

2. Judge RF

3. Hicks CF

4. Voit 1B

5. Stanton DH

6. Torres SS

7. Urshela 3b

8. Sanchez C

9. Frazier LF

Nope. Frazier is floundering and Gardner is in LF again today.

At what point will Yankee fans realize the possibility that Frazier's "breakout" defensive season last year is probably due to a small sample size? He only played 280 innings in the OF, or maybe 5 weeks worth of action. Remember how good Chavis still looked after 280 PA, when he still had an OPS over .800? (It was .806.) I think Frazier's defense in 2020 is that type of small sample inaccuracy...
