I like the signing.

He may play LF vs LHPs and some RF vs some RHPs.

I'm not sure Verdugo is a sure bet for CF. he said, "If the season started, today..."

I think we acquire a defensive CF'er- maybe Kiermaier.

Now if only he got to hit off Walden and Kyle Hart every game!

Goes oppo Johnson on the first HR.

The second one hit a car on the Mass Pike.

... and traded Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena, because his right-handed power would knock down the Monster. Pena, career .303 OBP... Renfroe .290 OBP -- rut-row; but I have a dog named Hunter (his rescue name my family refused to change), who brings a lot of energy to the lineup...

Pena SLG 445, 91 WRC+, 0.4 fWAR

Renfroe SLG 486, 102 WRC+, 3.8 fWAR

Pena didn't have the pronounced splits that Renfroe does and Renfroe actually has a professional glove.

Plus he can spell Verdugo in RF every once in a while.

Who is the 4th OF with Renfroe, Beni, and Verdugo? Where is the platoon?

LF - Beni

CF - Other

RF - Verdugo

4th OF - Renfroe

We are assuming we add another OF'er- likely a CF'er, but it could be a RF'er, if we want Verdugo in CF.

Renfroe would be the LF platoon with Beni and back up OF'er for RF. (Renfroe is not bad vs RHPs, especially in terms of power.)

I guess you could call him a platoon/4th OF'er.

I suppose an in-system 4th OF'er could be Duran, but he need to play to grow. Chavis might be able to learn LF well enough to not be a big negative. Munoz is off the 40 man roster, so we'd have to make room for him there.

Maybe we sign Pillar or Marisnik. Maybe we trade for Kiermaier.

I see it more like this:

LF: Beni-Renfroe

CF: Verdugo or Other

RF: Verdugo- Renfore or Other

The "Other" will determine a lot.

I'll bet donuts to dollars that the Other is a CFer.

Can you imagine a lineup of Renfroe ,Dalbec and Chavis? What is the MLB record for strikeouts by a team?

30 years ago, only 7 players had enough PA's to qualify for the batting title and have a K% above 25%. Last year, the amount went up to 41.

In 1990: Deer, Tettleton, Canseco, Fielder, Galarraga, Barfield, Sosa (those are some pretty good names)

Side note:

The 2019 Tigers hold the record for most k's in a year: 1,595.

The 2019 Padres hold the NL record: 1,581. Padres with > 100 k's: Myers, Hosmer, Renfroe, Machado, Tatis, Hedges

The 2019 Red Sox had 1,382 k's with 8 guys above 100 k's. The 1990 Red Sox had 795 k's with only Brunansky getting 105 k's.

Expect the record to be broken in 2021 if teams play 162 games.

He’s a Jonny Gomes type teammate and his bat certainly fits Fenway .I can’t bitch about this because it’s solid .I want springer For CF though don’t move Verdugo off RF .Welcome HR !!!

Gomes was fun as hell to watch.

I don't think they open up the wallets for Springer.

Verdugo should stay in RF 100%.

Good first real move by Bloom. He is attempting to address the biggest non-pitching move by shoring up the outfield. I doubt we can really know what the thinking is here but there are several that have been talked about.

1. Platoon Beni/Renfroe in left, Verdugo in center and other added for CF/RF.

2. Platoon Beni/Renfroe in left, bring in a CF or try Duran, leave Verdugo in RF

3. Bring back JBJ, Verdugo in RF and Beni/Renfroe in LF

I think this move may link to Chavis leaving as we don't need a bevy of swing and miss power hitters. Perhaps Beni could go depending on who else we might acquire for the outfield.

@IanCundall

The Renfroe signing makes a ton of sense for Boston as it gives them flexibility going forward to see how the CF market develops. Renfroe could be the opening day RF with Verdugo in CF or he could be the 4th OF and play primarily against LHP who he has a career .912 OPS against.

If they can snag a glove first CFer, I'd be happy with putting the rest of the $$$ into pitching.

I really like this move if Renfroe is expected to be a 4th OFer/platoon/depth player. If the Sox are planning to have an everyday OF of Beni, Verdugo, and Renfroe, I like the move less. There are too many question marks with that as an everyday alignment.
