Hiring a 76 year old drunk as manager - what could possibly go wrong?

There's a theory that Reinsdorf did this because he felt bad about firing Tony years ago. Sounds ridiculous, but maybe it's so.

A lot of baseball people drink. Do they drink enough to be labeled "drunks?" Likely, many do.

It's the driving part that shows irresponsibility, especially at that age.

How about the fact that he already had a DUI back in February when he crashed his car.

But wait, there's more:

La Russa pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Florida in 2007 after police found him asleep inside his running SUV at a stop light and smelling of alcohol.

'I accept full responsibility for my conduct, and assure everyone that I have learned a very valuable lesson and that this will never occur again,' La Russa said at the time.

A third DUI would probably lead to jail time for any of us pleebs. However, he's a rich drunk so he'll be just fine.

Hey show some respect!!! That drunk won a World Series in 1989!!

And hey, maybe when he got fired by Reinsdorf is when LaRussa started his drinking ...

In some states. a third DUI is a felony...

Fans all over the country have been debating all day which is worse: a drunk holding the wheel of a moving vehicle capable of high speeds on public roads... or a coach holding a trash can lid in a dugout.

Look, he's a young man who has made a mistake. I think this will help him grow as an individual. Let's just move on and worry about the real menaces to baseball: betting on baseball 35 years ago and sign stealing! Things like DUI's and spousal abuse (HOFer Bobby Cox) are just boys will be boys stuff.

But Cox owns the all-time record... for getting ejected. What a fighter!

Oof. That's a good one. Unlike Bobby Cox who is a bad boy bad boy.

I believe this is only two DUIs. The case just filed in October was for the DUI in February (which would be his second).

But as a 73-year-old stoner, I agree with your following post that we should let this young man learn from his mistakes and take this as an opportunity for personal growth.

You're right. Maybe he will mature a bit in his 80's...

Not that it matters, but Marcus Stroman said on Twitter that he would not play for LaRussa because of these concerns.

Also because the White Sox don't need starting pitching...

And cars have reverse. It's all good!

I don't think that's what reverse is for.

You might even be scary by Florida driving standards...

So Larussa had a DUI the day before he was hired. Nice look, Tony.

And he has the gall to try to pull special privilege.

ESPN obtained the full arrest report for Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa's DUI charge.

"Do you see my ring?" La Russa said to the arresting officer. "I'm a Hall of Famer baseball person. I'm legit. I'm a Hall of Famer, brother."

The old " show the cop your Hall of Fame ring " gimmick. I guess it used to work. Not any more.

... who drives in reverse after going the wrong way ;)

Well, if I'm going the wrong way, it will surely have me going the correct direction.

A quick trip to Louisiana and you will see all that and more.

FL drivers are horrible, but I still contend that RI drivers are the worst of anywhere I've lived. Have never been to LA the state though, just LA the city.

Chicago drivers are the safest. We just sit there in our Gridlock Sanctuary, free from harm...

If you're going the wrong way in reverse, aren't you actually going the right way? :P

No. Just facing it as you watch your destination disappear over the horizon...

I have to admit I have 'gone the wrong way' in a few grocery aisles with COVID-19 arrows on the floor.

If there's no one in the aisle, no harm done. Make a quick dash to what you need, then come back out in the right direction.
