I had been giving poster one a lot of grief about being such a debbie downer, so I felt my sarcasm would be obvious.

Don't forget, in these political times, it is impossible to say anything outrageous enough to be recognized as ironic.

Sometimes your bat just goes flying into the crowd when you're swinging for the fences. Gotta choke up on that bat moom!

Not to mention, the 2020 staff won't be needed to compensate for this outfield, as they have been disbanded and replaced by the 2021 staff...

And the OF includes Alex Verdugo and a guy who has 25+ bombs each of the previous 3 full seasons.

Sure, this OF could use Darren Lewis right now, but it's a stretch of a comparison.

Well, sarcasm and irony are 2 completely different things for the most part.

Irony: rain on your wedding day, free ride when you've already paid, good advice that you just wouldn't take

Sarcasm: rain on your wedding day IS ironic, free rides when you've already paid ARE CERTAINLY ironic too and good advice that isn't taken is LITTERALLY THE MOST IRONIC THING OF ALL TIME and not just some dumb decision the songwriter made because they have cotton balls in their ears and failed a 3rd grade vocabulary lesson that included the word "irony."

This is a jagged little pill to swallow.

There is something ironic about the fact that that song contains no true examples of irony...

Which of the things she mentions come closest to irony, is sort of an interesting question, if you have way too much time on your hands...

An old man turned 98

He won the lottery and died the next day Kinda ironic? It's all downhill from here.

It's a black fly in your Chardonnay

It's a death row pardon two minutes too late Holy s*** WTF... I didn't know this was a lyric

And isn't it ironic, don't you think?

It's like rain on your wedding day

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

And who would've thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly

He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye

He waited his whole damn life to take that flight

And as the plane crashed down, he thought

"Well, isn't this nice?"

And isn't it ironic, don't you think? NO it's just sad

It's like rain on your wedding day

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

And who would've thought, it figures

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

When you think everything's okay and everything's going right

And life has a funny way of helping you out

When you think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up

In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late

A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break

It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife

It's meeting the man of my dreams

And then meeting his beautiful wife Didn't know these ones either, but none are ironic

And isn't it ironic, don't you think?

A little too ironic

And, yeah, I really do think

It's like rain on your wedding day

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

And who would've thought, it figures

And, yeah, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out

Helping you out

If the song had been called "bad luck and/or poor timing", it would be a lot less ironic...

Thee may be some irony in finding a full 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife. But this is more likely a case of an excessively large and inadequately supplied silverware drawer. And that is just not a very good song title or topic...

Many of the examples in that song are not really irony.

The 1998 Red Sox were 70-59 (.542) in games not started by Pedro.

And the reason was the outfield? Maybe Saberhagen, Wake, Flash Gordon, Mo Vaughn and Nomar were the reason for most of the success of that team. I don’t get you. People say that the ‘98 Outfield was subpar and you argue that the team was over .500. LOL! Red Sox pitching sucked for much of the late 60 and 70’s yet they almost always finished above .500. It wasn’t because of their pitching. It’s the same concept here. The strength of the ‘98 team wasn’t their OF. No HOF candidates there.

I've already seen many signs. Our roster is way better than last year. I realize better than worst can still be bad, but we are not bad.

Signs from the season?

Many more wins.

Improvement from many of our pre-prime and prime players, which is a huge percentage of our roster.

Watching some kids get a look-see, at some point, this year.

Excitement from Devers, Bogey, JD, Verdugo and others, including a few pitchers many have all but written off.

I like your optimism. The only reason that I see many more wins in 2021 will be because they will have a 162 game season instead of 60 games.

Our 2020 winning % projected to less than 65 wins.

You really don't see us winning significantly more than that?

Even 81 wins is 25% improvement, which I would think seems pretty meaningful to a lot of fans.

I can't say I like your pessimism.

Offense: we lost JBJ- you know the guys that drove 90% of this site nuts with his repeated and prolonged mega slumps. We gained Renfroe, EHern & Cordero. We have several young players (Devers, Bogey, Verdugo, Dalbec, Vaz, Renfroe and others nearing or in the meat of their primes. One can project a decline from JD due to his age, but I have to think he'll do better than 2020.

Defense: Lost JBJ, which hurts. We gained EHern, Renfroe, Cordero and will see more from Dalbec and nothing from Moreland. Net loss.

Pitching: Beating a dead horse. I won't spell it out, but between returning pitchers like ERod & Sale, more innings from Houck, Pivetta & Hern and additions like Richards, Ottavino and others versus the loss of the clowns we put out there last year, this isn't even close. If we can't gain 14-20 wins, I'll be shocked.

My guess is, we win 16-24 more games.

65 is putrid. That winning percentage was vomit inducing. I don’t see them doing much better than 70-72 wins this season unless there are additions to this squad or pleasant surprises.

You really must have thought last year's team way over performed, if you think this team is just 5 wins better.

i am not seeing the significant improvement. I will add 7 -12 wins for ERod.

Did you look at who started the vast majority of our games in 2020?

Pro-rated to 162 games (2.7 x GS'd):

19 Godley

16 Mazza

14 Weber

11 Brewer

8 Hart

5 Kickham

5 Triggs

14 these 5 combined: Lever, Hall, Osich, Brice & Brasier

That's 92 TOTAL!

Give those to ERod, Richards, Sale and more from Houck & Pivetta.

Maybe Perez & Eovaldi stay about the same as their pro-rated 2020:

Perez 32> 32

Eovaldi 23>23

All you see is 7-12 more wins due to ERod?

Given your opinion voiced in your posts, all surprises should be pleasant surprises...

I have to think it's kind of funny some of the "cliff deniers" are the now projecting doom & gloom, and many of the "cliff dwellers" are the more optimistic ones.

No, the point was that having three mediocre outfielders did not bring the team down even in games Pedro did not pitch...

But hey, this year, the RS can use the 'mercy rule,' as today. That should make up for other small things--like the fact that they got rid of their best players.

I'm sure there is more than the OF he's down on.

The season is a disaster in his eyes.

An impending disaster... with a glimmer of hope. Edited by a700hitter
