Completely agree with both you and Connie Mack. The value of the starting pitcher has gone down.

In 2021, ER will be back and some version of Sale will be back at some point, but Bloom will have his work cut out for him rebuilding a rotation and bullpen. Eovaldi and Perez are, at best, part time starters as neither is durable enough to last an entire season. He needs to add 3 MLB starters and completely rebuild the bullpen.

It could be very difficult unless E-Rod makes it back and perhaps Pivetta will be some version of a starter. I don't expect Sale back until mid season and then who knows how. effective he will be. If we get a starter from our prospect list then we still need a top of the rotation guy. That is a best case scenario. we could need 2 or more. Starting and relief pitching should be our focus.

 

Maybe some of the player development personnel we are changing will help us and we can bring up useful players from the minors. The process of strengthening the team will take time as many of our experiments will not work out.

Eovaldi lacks durability in a big way, but Perez made 109 starts in last 4 years before coming to Boston.

if it was a one for one deal with no money going either way, I'd have done it. (I might have even thrown in $2-3M a year or Chatham.)

 

Odor's lux tax hit is $8.25M x 2, but his actual pay is $12.33M x 2, so the money works well for us, in terms of taxes, and Texas only pays $5M more to get Eovaldi.
