You honestly don’t believe the risk of infection is huge at a hospital?

Of course there's a huge risk. As long as you wash your hands like its your religion, don't touch your face, and wear mask and gloves, that risk goes down a little. And the patient would be knocked out, and then sent home relatively quickly considering the need for beds

What is it about non essential do you fail to comprehend. TJ surgery is hardly essential surgery. If the Governor has banned non essential surgery then it is prohibited under the current health emergency., end of argument.

It's not that I don't understand what counts as non-essential, it's that I was not aware that such a prohibition was in place. Excuse me for trying to be a straight A student and not keeping up to date with every depressing piece of news that comes out of all 50 states

Ok, so then using that logic nobody should get surgeries ever
That statistic tells you that hospitals are dangerous places with a terrible problem that needs fixing.

This brings me to the philosophy I've had since the pandemic began: It's ok to live in fear, but you can't stop living your life because of fear. Are you suggesting Chris Sale NOT get surgery because of the risk of a bacterial infection?

No, not at all. I was just assessing the risk to him of bacterial infection vs the virus.

Alright, so then it basically helps my argument

Yes. It does help your argument. Life goes on. The Florida healthcare system isn't under duress at this time. And surgery needed for your livelihood isn't elective. No facelifts, please or boob jobs.

My tax professor in the fall told us about a court case that a stripper won that allowed her to claim the medical expense itemized deduction for her boobjob after it was deemed essential to her occupation

LOL! I was going to put "except for strippers" but i didn't want to be accused of being a dirty old man.

Look, I don't know what your problem has been today, but I feel a more insulting undertone than normal. Just because I have my life figured out and have found a way to be happy during this tough time doesn't mean I'm selfish and have lost touch with what's important for the world. The key to happiness is being content no matter the situation. I suggest you try it

No, forget that. I'm sorry for that last comment. I'm not sorry for my opinions and the things I say on here. Feel free to disagree with whatever you want. I personally don't like being so viciously attacked every time I express a different opinion than the mighty mvp 78, but I realize the mental and emotional toll this new norm we call life is taking on everybody. Just because I've found a way to cope doesn't mean everybody else has. To all, I wish you the best. Good health, good financial safety, and good personal safety. And more importantly, a good night

Thunder, you are very level-headed and respectful of others. Impressive for someone of any age, never mind someone so young.

We just watched the 3rd game of the 2018 ALDS on MLB.COM where the Red Sox clobbered the Yankees 16 to 1. Our mental health improved considerably as a result. Today we will watch game 4.

1 little TJ operation takes what, like 2 hours? Plus, it's not like COVID-19 patients are getting operated on, at least not regularly

You are missing the point. It's not just one little TJS. If he is allowed to get it done, how many other non-essential surgeries do you think are being done for the wealthy? Blaine Hardy, a player on the Twins minor league roster also just had TJS.

But the main point is that every resource that is used for a non-essential surgery is one resource that is being taken away from critical patients during a time when those resources are greatly, greatly needed.

It's not smart to postpone surgeries and risk someone else's health by restricting it to coronavirus patients only. Obviously they should get priority, but if somebody else needs an operation, they should be able to get an operation

If it's an essential surgery, by all means. If it's an elective surgery, it can wait.

Even if the ban on non-essential surgeries did not exist, postponing the surgery until after the crisis would be the right thing to do.

I really don't know how to feel about it.

But the Red Sox silence on the matter is a little weird.

Asked Chaim Bloom if Red Sox know date yet for Chris Sale's Tommy John and who will perform it.

Had "no further comment" beyond comments he made during original conference call.

"We will update everyone at the appropriate time," he wrote in an email

Sox keeping this pretty quiet

The Red Sox, like Sale's agent, are not saying anything. It's unclear whether or not he underwent surgery yet. How much that matters is up for interpretation.

To me, this sounds like Sale has already had the surgery or is intending to have it any day now.

The "We will update everyone at the appropriated time" sounds like the Sox know that it's a very bad look to prioritize Sale's surgery now over the coronavirus.

That's my interpretation.

Sounds like a plan. I need to re-watch the 2018 postseason.

Key line from that article"

"That perception is both accurate and inaccurate. Three professors of epidemiology who spoke with The Daily Beast explained that Syndergaard and Sale are, in all likelihood, not impinging on the ability of health-care professionals to respond to the virus, nor are they diverting resources. "

Sorry, I just don't see a way to justify these surgeries during this crisis.

I'm with you here, Kimmi. In reading the article from the link I see very few people defending the surgeries who don't have some kind of a vested interest in their position.

Clearly the athletes (wealthy) get preference over those who are not wealthy. Hard to judge whether it impacts life and death care scenarios but it certainly is grounds for bad press.

We knew that was true once the final NBA box score was tallied: CDC:77 OKC Thunder 58

That was for COVID-19 tests administered (by that date)...

What are you suggesting? CDC officials going door to door to test the poor?
