I agree with this point of view. I would hate to tell a patient, "sorry the ventilator is not available, you have to wait while we do Tommy John surgery on someone". Elective surgery needs to wait, even though it may inconvenience a sports team.

The ventilator situation has nothing to do with the OR situation though?

Absolutely true. But I can’t overlook the possibility that he is an insufferable ******* and won’t donate his stash.

But in all likelihood, he doesn’t have a stash and just uses operating rooms and supplies in the hospitals where he is in staff anyway...

I'm guessing that Dr. Andrews is well off enough that he can afford to postpone his surgeries, etc. until this crisis blows over. I would assume that he does his surgeries out of hospitals, but I'd also assume that he has some kind of supplies in his private practice office that might be helpful. Gloves? Masks?

Exactly oldtimer. We'd all like for Sale to be able to pitch for us as soon as possible, but baseball takes a back seat to saving human lives.

Whether it does or not, that's not the point.

There are hospitals that are not strained yet. Austin just mentioned that the hospitals weren't. I wonder if the couldn't fly somewhere where the hospitals are not hit yet? Not sure if doctors can do that or have to be registered with certain hospitals.

At the very least, it's probably a 'bad look'.

I'm asking, are non essential operations put on hold in all the USA, or just in certain areas. If just certain areas I wouldn't see why them flying to a non hot zone to do the operation would be an issue.

He should just get it done secretly.

Maybe it's already done. (Probably not.) It was noted that the Red Sox did not say which doctor would be doing it.

It's a very bad look.

I will be disappointed in Sale and the Red Sox if I hear that he had the surgery during this crisis.

I am sure that people in the entertainment industry aren't putting a hold on Botox injections and cosmetic surgery.

Many physicians are so specialized that they'll be of minimal help in the COVID-19 crisis.

Noah Syndergaard is having his TJ surgery on Thursday. I guess that settles that.

Get Sale in there and ask for a 2 for 1 surgery special so we have money for some starting pitchers.

I don't disagree. I would be disappointed in any of them too.

It's not necessarily the help of the physicians, but rather the hospital equipment and supplies they are using.

Hmmm. And he's having it done in a hospital in New York, of all places. SMH

That's about the worst look possible.

What a noxious thing to do. People are dying for lack of space and equiment in NY hospitals. A month or two delay until we get over the hump makes more sense.

Yup. I’m coordinating response for my hospital and for the system. Lots of MDs are so specialized that they’re not useful for this plague.

This story says Syndergaard is having the surgery in Florida. Also has some discussion about the preferential treatment thing.

"I know that I’m going to get criticized for taking care of these kinds of guys, but it’s essential to their livelihoods," Dr. Neal ElAttrache told the San Francisco Chronicle'

Um..yeah. What a bunch of spin. There's a difference between hospital care being "essential to the livelihoods" of someone who's already a multi-millionaire and essential to *living* of those who are sick.

I'm not sure who the bigger culprit is here. Is it the team for insisting that the surgery happen ASAP? Is it the athlete? Or is is the doctor for trying to justify it?

This is one of those situations when the good Dr. should have kept his mouth shut rather than trying to justify something that isn't justifiable.

Honestly, I get that doctors like Andrews and ElAttrache are not going to help the COVID-19 crisis. They’re specialists. My dentist isn’t helping either. But yes, the whole “essential to our livelihood” angle smacks of someone saying something he himself doesn’t believe...

Completely agree.

I do want to correct one thing from my post. The surgery is being done in a hospital in FL, not in NY. Doesn't change my opinion though.

All three are at fault here, IMO. Maybe the medical professional who is still willing to perform this type of procedure knowing the crisis that his colleagues are facing is being the most irresponsible.
