Does any of that matter to armchair budgetmeisters?

the budgie in me loves when the numbers are in favor of the team instead of the player.

Because you care too much about saving money for John Henry.

I can't believe you'd say that about yourself.

I like to keep track of payroll numbers but I don't bitch about the front office decisions. Big difference.

Compare his contract to Pillar's.

Kevin Pillar has been worth $94.6 million. this is $13.6 million less then JBj. so if JBj is making $11 million this season then pillar should be paying John Henry $2.6 million to play for the Red Sox this season. or not.

I do. But only when they involve really big contracts or medium sized ones for oft-injured SPs...

Too busy bitching about other posters.

This doesn't make any sense.

Or when they didn't non-tender JBJ.

Or when they didn't non-tender JBJ.

Should they have? Couldn't they have non tendered him and signed him for 2/12? Wouldn't that have saved them money. I'm sure if they did that there'd be a lot of people high fiving on here.

in my Harmony voice...

Jackie Bradley Jr's value per Fangraphs is $108.2 million.

Jackie Bradley Jr has earned $20.3 million making him UNDERPAID by $87.9 million. or not.

Nearly....the 'or not' needs to be underneath all the rest of the text. For added smugness.

Or not.

Yes, but only if no one else wanted him for more. Once they non-tender him, he is a free agent.

Now they could have offered him 2 yrs / $12mill instead of tendering him arbitration, But no way was Bradley's agent ever going to advise him to accept that...

There's a risk to everything. We now know that we could have signed Pillar, Hamilton and more for less than the cost of JBJ.

It's funny though. Questioning that move at the time was the right thing. Now it's "don't use Pillar's actual market value" which is just a bad faith argument. It was a legit question then that wasn't just some TalkSox creation.

Once they off-loaded Price, even at half of the value, and Betts, the need to deal JBJ dropped precipitously...

I agree. I don't think they need or should trade JBJ. The only way I'd trade JBJ is if he got extremely hot and someone wanted to give up some great prospects for him. I just don't believe that trade market is there. It's better for the Sox to just hold onto him, expect at .750 OPS and try to retain him for cheaper money going forward.

I was a bit surprised too. Maybe they were concerned that if they non-tendered him, he would say 'OK, f*** you guys', and sign somewhere else even if we offered the same money.

Or maybe Henry really likes him?

I just figure they considered all these things and had their reasons.

Sure. We just don't know the reasons so we can't debate them. All we have is salary and on field performance.

I don't believe that Bloom would make a move that didn't have some logistical reason behind it. DD was much more of the "I want my player and I want it now" kinda guy. Bloom seems more patient and hopefully has a better plan.

@ChrisCotillo

Kevin Pillar deal could become official today. Going through physical now.

Can we even trust the medical staff to do this?!??!?!?
