I think by demanding the Dodgers take Price, we got less of a return for Mookie than we would have otherwise.

If you break it down

For one year of Betts, the Sox got 5 years of Alex Verdugo

For David Price plus $48million, the Sox got Brusdar Graterol

The second trade, even with the money, actually looks lopsided in the Sox favor...

I disagree that there were 2 trades. This was a package, but if you want to divide it up like that. Half-price Price for Graterol is a ripoff of the Red Sox.

I worded that post wrongly.

So you think we demanded LA take Price and not LA wanting half-price Price.

Me, too.

Not a comparison. Betts was arguably the best player in the league not named Mike Trout. Edwin Diaz was a good player at an unessential position. Players of Mookie's ilk are people you build around.

Mookie also makes $27 million this season. Believe it or not, the right to pay Mookie that kind of cash for one season wasn’t worth what many seem to think...

I think we don't trade Betts to LA, unless they took Price.

I'd have liked the deal without Graterol, or if we paid $19-20M a year not $16M.

Well, the trade simulator said Betts was about equal to Verdugo.

It also said Price was worth -55M, so giving $48M looks like a Sox plus, according to them. Graterol was just gravy on top of a good deal to start with.

That being said, if we didn't have to reset, and future budgets had the sky as the limit, I don't make this deal.

Considering the second best offer for Betts involved keeping Price and taking on most of Wil Myers’ contract, I think Bloom did OK...

I would disagree there. But I think Graterol will be pretty good.

If you did this entire trade on baseballtradevalues.com without Graterol, and just traded Betts, Price and $48 million for Alex Verdugo, it comes up with the Sox having a slight advantage. Add in Graterol and the Sox come out well ahead...

How does Graterol vs Half Price Price come out?

Other than the salary dump, it is premature to say whether Bloom did well or not. Remember Verdugo is coming off an jury. It remains to be seen if he plays an entire season injury free or how well he does when he does play.

Of course. And Price is coming off an injury too.

The Hindsight Jury will render the ultimate verdict, as always.

It is hard to find a case of a player this good this young getting moved - let alone in a salary dump.

Ever heard of Miguel Cabrera? Traded at age 24 in a salary dump. Hall of Famer. How about Texas trading A-Rod at age 28 in a salary dump? Its been done before many times by a lot of teams. Its not just the Red Sox.

White Sox traded Chris Sale to Sox in a salary dump. Montreal traded Pedro Martinez to the Red Sox in a salary dump.
Montreal (1997) and the Marlins (2008) -- 2 of the best run organizations in history.

Sale wasn't a salary dump. He was quite a cost controlled asset (3 years @ $13 million/year) and he netted the top prospects from the Sox. That was a move to build not to control

costs.

How about A-Rod, Chris Sale, Tom Seaver and Babe Ruth? All salary dump trades.
Sale wasn't a salary dump. ARod (2003) forced the issue with the Rangers. Seaver (1977) was 32 years old. The situation was more complicated than a salary dump. He had a year and a half left on his Mets contract and it was the Mets. Ruth (1920). You have to go back 10, 20 and 40 years to find examples that aren't really comparable to this Betts situation and the Mets, Expos and Marlins are jokes. The Red Sox shouldn't be emulating them.

You missed the big one and the most recent one -- Giancarlo Stanton (2018). Again -- the Marlins -- a joke.

This situation has to be judged on its own merits IMO

We dumped one year of a player who is openly determined to test free agency, in a season that most of us agree would likely be chasing a Wild Card at best, with or without Mookie.

And that's beside all the tax re-set crap...

Red Sox blew up the team. Verdugo is an average MLB player. Nowhere close to Betts 6+ WAR and MVP contender status every season.

But they do immediately remove 57m from their cap this year. So I'm assuming they are under the luxury cap now.

Next step is to trade Jackie Bradley Jr. and insert Verdugo into the CF position.

As for RF, we can plug in Benitendi.

Good bye Mookie Betts.

I hope this doesn't hurt us as much as the Ruth trade did. Didn't win a championship again for how many years, was it?

Beni can't play our RF nor is he a MLB CFer for that matter. But it might just not matter for one year, especially this year.

I have no problem with the Price move. It is the Betts Verdugo aspect of the trade that bothers me. Let's not kid

ourselves it was the Betts Verdugo aspects of the deal that were the key pieces for both teams. If Verdugo ends up spending too much time injured then Bloom will look like a blooming fool.

It's really this simple.

Maybe the Red Sox shouldn't be emulating them, but it is hard to say this team was moving like a well-oiled machine when they spent nearly a quarter of a billion dollars and left no room to accommodate their own homegrown superstar. The Expos never had money; losing Martinez was understandable and inevitable. The Red Sox made their own mess that only had two possible solutions. Trade Betts, or lose him one year later for nothing but a draft pick...

Posted

To keep the team as a top contender, we'd have had to spend like maniacs for several more year. That would have forced draft penalties and massive taxes.

A reboot was inevitable. The only questions were when and for how long.

Had we waited until after 2020, it's my opinion the bottom would be lower and last longer.

Just a question if our Starters are healthy ? Sale ,Erod ,Bruiser ,Evo and openers ? What about The lineup ? Xander ,JDM ,Verdugo ,Devers ,Chavis ,Benny ,Vaz ? Pretty good right ? How about the fact Paxton may not be healthy all year not just 3 or 4 months ? Is the Yankee Starters besides Cole really that formidable with our lineup ? Would any one be shocked if this team as constructed may win over 95 games ? Do we remember 2013 ? why is the sky falling on most of you ? Do we root for Boston or the players names ? Was Mookie also a war hero ? Did he cure cancer ? I’m excited about this team and until I see different we can win a World Series in 2020 .....I’ll say it first we should not pay Mookie 400 million we should let some other team Pay Mookie 400 million .Thanks for 18 Mookie but we are on to 2020 and beyond we are title town still.
