I expected as much. He was probably worth maybe $10-12M x 3 on the open market, so we actually got LA to pay more than his worth.

 

Now, he could bounce back and make me eat those words, but I for one am glad to be rid of Price.

This is a great trade .The truth is ownership made this deal much harder than it needed to be but getting to reset and get Alex Brady Verdugo is a damn good start and getting a very young closer ? Hell yes This is a damn good haul .Betts is amazing no questions asked but he’s not in the friendly confines of Fenway any longer Dorthy .Mookie you are missed already pal don’t get it twisted . The Dodgers turning him into Rich Hill is entirely plausible and a good bet for $18M a year. And of course they got a one year look at Mookie Betts which doesn't hurt. Boston got a cost controlled starting CF and an interesting pitcher with at least some starter upside. And the Red Sox did not get the full benefit of the salary dump.

 

Bloom's deal considering the mandate from ownership was probably the best he could do - there is no winning this deal. The mandate was deplorable.

I've said in the other thread I'm torn on this. Love getting Verdugo, really don't like sending Price and paying him $15m a year for the pleasure, only to get back a young guy that has a very harsh record with injuries. My guess is he's going straight in the pen, as I don't see him staying healthy in a rotation.

 

A lot to play out of the next year or two. One thing for sure, I don't think Bloom is finished yet. I think there are still plenty of moves to go.

 

It at least puts us in play for Mookie next year, even though I don't want us to give away the contract that he'll be after.

Resetting the tax was not our only problem. We'd be in the same boat in 2021, assuming we will try to be competitive right away, had we not traded Price.

 

IMO, Bloom will spend the savings from Price to get more value than Price was projected to give us over the last 3 years of his contract.

 

Price may bounce back and make it look like a bad deal, but it was clear that we could have gotten more prospects back with Verdugo had we not included Price. Price was forced on LA, and they insisted on money to make it balance out the Betts-Verdugo equation.
