What should Bloom's plan be?

  1. 1. What should Bloom's plan be?

    • Plug in holes in roster and compete
    • Hold steady and dump salary during the season
    • Trade Price for salary relief while taking on a bad contract
    • Trade Betts for prospects
    • Trade some combo of Eovaldi/JBJ/other to get under tax cap

Jackie Bradley Jr., J.D. Martinez and Brandon Workman have limited trade value:

... but the Red Sox could pursue trades nevertheless.

Oh, I get that JD & JBJ have very limited trade value, but something is better than nothing. If nothing is all that is offered, I might still do it to save money. (True, no money will be "saved" for 2021, unless JD opts in, but money saved now by Henry could be used to pay taxes later.)

Workman could get us something nice. He could also be packaged with JD, JBJ, Price or Eovaldi to lessen the financial additions we'd likely have to make to dump the last 2.

How about Eovaldi, JD, JBJ & Workman to TX for Odor, Frazier & Hernandez (C prospect)?

I'm not sure the Rangers want to spend this much, but you get the theory, assuming Betts is traded as well..

According to The Athletic, the Red Sox have discussed a trade involving Mookie Betts and Wil Myers:

That makes little sense although Athletic reporter Dennis Lin was in on the breaking story of the Craig Kimbrel trade back with Lin was with the San Diego Union-Tribune.

It's got to include Price or Eovaldi.

I've suggested such trades on the trade simulator- like this one:

Betts & Price

for

Myers, Margot, Quantrill, Campusano & Morejon

Here's one the trade simulator accepted:

Betts & Eovaldi

for

Myers, Margot, Patino & Campusano

If there is no Price or Eovaldi attached, maybe adding JBJ might work, although OF is not a SD need once they get Betts.

Betts & JBJ (+$4M)

for

Myers, Margot, Gore & Campusano

or

Betts for Myers, Gore, Campusano & Rosario

(Not saying I like these deals.)

The checkbook has been in the safe since the Eovaldi signing.

Unless you included the extensions for Sale and Bogey, which we probably should...

How are the votes for plug and compete creeping up. Yes we compete with the lineup we have when healthy, However, there is no guarantee that Mookie even wants the long term deal in Boston. Furthermore, if we sign him and its in the ballpark of of 10-330/380mil what does that do to our spending down the road. We need to make the most of the situation and replenish the farm. If Sale or Price miss multiple games( certain to happen) and god forbid Erod go down, who is left to fill those voids? There are no arms coming that will make a difference. Go get some prospects and move on from 2020.

It's still 13-8 on wanting some sort of sell-off at some point before or at the deadline.

I thought the vote would be flipped 8-13.

I think a lot of fans don't want to go through with a season where ownership waved the white flag in January.

Not really since posters can pick for more than one poll option.

Agreed.

I think they wait until the deadline.

I understand the business side, but as a fan, my choice would be to go for it in 2021 or 2022 and give up on 2020.

Chain Bloom said that he won't rush hiring a new manager. He is prepared to start Spring Training without a manager being named. The guys on MLB's Hot Stove went ballistic over his comments.

Maybe having a bench coach for ST is enough? I mean, how many middle aged dues in ill fitting uniforms do you need standing around during a game?

The point that Harold Baines made is that the manager sets the tone for the team. He thought Boston was inviting another instance of inmates running the asylum scenario with no one in charge. As a former big leaguer Harold Baines has a lot of credibility and his comments have to be taken seriously.

If Bloom is serious about not naming a manager before the start of ST, I'd say Henry learned nothing from last year's disastrous ST.

Unless the future manager will already be with the team and not just given that title?
