Trade Price. Non tender JBJ. Trade Eovaldi.

I'm guessing the offers they got for Eovaldi were dismal, ones that required us to eat a lot of money.

Also Bloom might not want to trade Eovaldi that much. Was it him who signed Eovaldi for the Rays?

He might also think we need a hard-throwing right hander in the rotation.

I'm just speculating there, really.

Too late to non tender JBJ. Trading Eovaldi would mean we pay some of his contract, too.

No s***. I didn’t want to tender him in the first place.

I thought they had a deal in place for him when the tendered him.

I never expected this.

We could have reset by trading Price, assuming people are right about LA actually wanting him for $15M x 3 and replacing JBJ with a cheapy all glove CF'er.

We'd still be screwed losing Betts for nothing, so I think that's the real reason we decided to trade Betts and keep JBJ.

If you guys would be crying over paying him $38M a year, in essence, we'd really be paying him $57M a year (38 salary +19 tax).

add another $17MM to that number. the 45% surtax for being $40MM over 2 years in a row if they didnt reset.

Competitive Balance Tax:

Clubs that exceed the threshold by $20 million to $40 million are also subject to a 12 percent surtax. Meanwhile, those who exceed it by more than $40 million are taxed at a 42.5 percent rate the first time and a 45 percent rate if they exceed it by more than $40 million again the following year(s).

Isn't that just on the money over the $40M line?

You seem pizzed.

Nope. It's just a Friday and I don't want to do any work today. My boss is on a plane back to NY, so I'm likely to get through the day without being hassled.

i think they can DFA him in ST and only be on the books for a fraction of the $11MM?

i believe the surtax is applied to anything over $208MM

For third year over threshold:

208-228 mill rate is 50%

228-248 mill rate is 62%

248 and over rate is 95%

is that definite?

i have a hard time finding the exact layout of this. my understanding is the surtax % is based on how much over you were and you are taxed on all the overage accordingly.

It's just like personal income tax brackets. The tax rate applies to the amount within the bracket.

i'm just not sure about that.

this is the paragraph:

Clubs that exceed the threshold by $20 million to $40 million are also subject to a 12 percent surtax. Meanwhile, those who exceed it by more than $40 million are taxed at a 42.5 percent rate the first time and a 45 percent rate if they exceed it by more than $40 million again the following year(s).

i read this as there is no surtax if you are at $227MM. but once you hit $228 you get whacked with a 12% tax on the amount over $208MM (there is a possibility the 12% tax may be applied to the full $228). if you are $40MM over then you get hit extra hard and the tax rate is not 12% but 42.5%. 2 years in a row $40mm over and that rate goes to 45%.

i think more research is needed.

we need sam kennedy to chime in on this one.

I could not be more confident about my understanding of how it works, because I verified it with the actual taxes the Sox paid for 2018 and 2019.

Puig.

If Arodys Vizcaino is healthy, he can be a difference maker. But he’s NEVER healthy...

They need to pick through Hellickson, McHugh, Taijuan, Cashner and Buchholz and maybe grab two of them?

Dozier could have been a one year rental at 2b.

Brock Holt seems to make sense. Maybe they are waiting out the market to pay him as little as possible?

Seems like if they non tendered JBJ that he'd be sitting along side Pillar.

Buchholz? Welcome to the dark side.

Holt would make some sense, but right now Bloom's focus needs to be on pitching, pitching, pitching.

I'm of the opinion that if they don't sign Brock Hold they're going to regret it sooner or later. Assuming they have any interest in winning, that is.

I'd like to see him back. I guess we'd have to give Arauz back (rule 5), but guys like Holt help in a lot of ways not captured by stats or metrics.

I was kind of thinking he was holding out in hopes we freed up some budget space, and he could come back to where he wants to play.
