Cole is a Yankee @ 9 years and $324 million. Talk about an overpay. But he makes the current Yankees team a hell of a lot better

I was wrong but that was a great way to wake up today. wow! still work to be done though! lets go!

Sucks to see Didi leave. He was a great Yankee. I also didn't wanna have to change my avatar.

If it helps your decision making, I never looked at your avatar anyway ;)

This is the alpha move that we haven’t made in a decade. Meh, I disagree that there’s much more work to be done beyond adding a CFer capable of filling in for two months. I don’t care if it’s Gardner. I really don’t. As long as the guy can play D, I don’t really care about the bat. It just cannot be expensive. Then we have to offload Happ to get the room to add that CFer. If the CFer is really cheap, then I go for Betances for a season

Yeah, he got a pretty sweet deal. He also got a $2 mil buyout on an option for 2021. Gardy had a hell of a season last year, no doubt, and I know they love his leadership, but I wonder why they are bringing him back in the fold when the OF is already crowded and we supposedly have a top prospect out there who is running out of options in Frazier. Gardy coming in almost confirms that Frazier is gonna move on

Romine to the Tigers, 1 yr $4.1 mil. This clearly puts Higashioka in as the backup. I liked Romine a lot, but I understand the reticence to put $4 mil towards a guy with a near mirror image skill set to Higashioka. Maybe Romine is a bit better at putting the ball in play and Higa a bit better with the power, but that is about it

It's been rumored, quite plausibly, that the Yanks will sign Maldonado because of his excellent CERA with Cole.

As of right now, the Yanks have a projected Lux tax calculation of $259,304,214. That is $11.3 mil over the final threshold.

With all the spending, I do wonder if the Yanks decide to just destroy the $40 mil overage. No point in going past it by a couple mil like the sox did in 2018. If you're gonna go past it, go for it.

Otherwise, the only deal I can forsee beyond the unlikely grievance issue with Ellsbury is a Happ trade. With the $11.3 mil in overages, it sounds like we have the amount we would need to recoup in a Happ trade. Happ plus $5 mil for whomever you want to give us.

Well, those deadline acquisitions they made in 2018 helped them win the World Series, so I'd call that a point.

Of course, but I'm sure the Angels would have been flexible with the amount of money especially if the sox kicked in another prospect

Would that really be worth it? We gave up an excellent prospect in Buttrey as it was.

Worth it to avoid the ten spot penalty? Probably, especially if the difference was only a few hundred thousand.

They ended up going over by 2.5 million.

Cashman's next move is to package a guy like Cessa, Tarpley, or Holder with Happ. That would bring the payroll down by about 17.5-18 million

I am loving the depth of this team right now. I'm not saying everyone is going to stay healthy, or have career years, or even all star years. I realize some players have down years too, but wow I just really love what Cashman has done. If we can trade Happ and only pay off some of Ellsbury money, we'd be in excellent positon. Only thing I didn't like was this Hicks extension, I thought we should have sold high but no GM hits on every move they make. Cashman has done more good than bad.

I don't think any of the mediocre middle relief candidates quite qualify as an enticement to get another team to take on $17mill worth of a 1.3 fWAR starting pitcher with a 5.22 FIP. Typically, these enticements use a real prospect with actual value that another team thinks is worth the $17mill commitment. The Pirates had to include twice-ranked Ryan McGuire to entice the Blue Jays to take on Francisco Liriano for example. Most teams already have a Tarpley/Holder/Cessa type in their system that they can already use for a lot less money...

Maybe other teams are thinking they can get a 3WAR pitcher on the cheap and are willing to take a higher upside guy with no role as enticement? Happ was a 3 WAR pitcher on average from 2015-2018. I agree that if we are to offload Happ without including money, we’ll need to pay with other players

Much like the Sox pitchers, Happ has aged since then. So you keep pointing out that Price, who is 3 years younger than Happ, is getting old and his career is going the wrong way, but now you think 37yo Happ is a prime bounce back candidate? Pinstriped glasses or what?

One year ago, Eovaldi (who is significantly younger than Happ) was a hot commodity. Think he still is? He’d be available on a shorter deal than one year ago. Sure he was hurt last year, but which of his past suitors would really be surprised here?

Like Happ, Eovaldi makes about $17mill. Unlike Happ, he’s 29 and turns 30 in a couple months. So why go for Happ based on 2 years ago when 30yo Eovaldi is available? If you’re answer involves recency, Happ isn’t coming off a stellar year.

The Yankees could entice with other players definitely.

But definitely not Tarpley or Holder or Cessa

Happ’s value of -9.1 is too much for any of Cessa (4.8), Tarpley (1.1) or Holder (1.0) to overcome. Or all 3 combined...
