If desperate Dave winds up as the angels GM, does he trade trout to get payroll flexibility and prospects?

San Diego is right down the road and they can offer a ton of great prospects!

Atlanta can offer a ton of pitching prospects!

Jeter can offer a bad case of the clap and a few mediocre prospects!

The choices are endless for desperate Dave!

He might have, but not me.

??? You said you'd like to have given Ben one more year in your previous post. So what does this post mean?

The Angels would be a bad place for DD. Their farm is pretty rough beyond Adell. DD is a finisher. You don’t hire him when you’ve got an expensive roster, limited cap space and an empty cupboard

Has he actually been a 'finisher' with every team he's been with?

They are desperate to keep up with the Dodgers while Trout gets older and older. If they can't get to the playoffs in the next few years, they have failed the greatest player of our generation.

They also have Brandon Marsh, who was BA #43 before the 2020 season...

In the "What If" department, would we be calling Trout that if Jose Fernandez had not had his tragic boating accident?

I doubt it only because pitcher careers are much more unreliable.

Great in 13, missed time in 14 and 15, great in 16. There's a much higher risk for a young pitcher to either fall off or get injured than a guy like Trout.

It’s what he’s become. He was a builder in Miami

In his one championship season there, he built the team with a spending spree of high priced free agents and veterans, and then immediately dismantled it a year later. Typically not what one refers to as a "builder:...

True, but Fernandez certainly had the talent to become an all time great. Of all the pitchers ever labeled "The Next Pedro", he was probably the most deserving...

In March MLB News ranked the Red Sox and Angel farm systems No. 25 and No. 26:

Since MLB Pipeline began ranking prospect talent before the 2015 season, the top-rated systems have sparked big league success. The Cubs (pre-2015) and Red Sox (mid-'15) won World Series, the Dodgers (pre-2016) advanced to consecutive World Series, and the Brewers (mid-'16) and Braves (pre-'17) have made multiple playoff appearances. Dombo:

traded for Gary Sheffield

signed Bobby Bonilla

signed Moises Alou

signed Devon White

traded for Jim Eisenreich

traded for John Cangelosi

signed Kevin Brown

signed Alex Fernandez

signed Al Leiter

All of the above played a pivotal role for the 1997 team. Only one guy was still there in 1999 (Fernandez).

That is neither here nor there.

But our new GM did build the number one farm system on that list...

He also put some pieces in place for the Marlins team that won in 2003, didn't he?

Some. And some of the major contributors (Ivan Rodriguez, Dontrelle Willis, Pierre, Uribina, Conine) were under Beinfest.

In 1999 he signed Cabrera, drafted Beckett and traded for Penny.

Yeah, I'd say he had something to do with the 2003 title.

Not you what?

I was saying that reportedly Dombrowski wanted to keep Cherington...

Ahh... My eyes are failing me. I thought you were saying DD wanted to stay one more year, too.

Yes, DD wanted Ben to stay. Food for thought for all the DD lovers that hate Ben.

This team would have been better if Ben had stayed.

Not to take anything away from Hazen, who has shown himself to be a pretty good GM himself...

No, I just wonder if Ben would have been able to step in with some authority and maybe part with fewer prospects (i.e. Allen, Dubon, etc.). I bet the big trades get made, but maybe they just don't overwhelm the other team with prospects in every f-r-e-a-k-i-n deal.

3 last places in 4 years. Henry signed off on DD hire. He's the best owner we've had. I trust his judgement.
