DD acquired 2 aces. Rather expensively, some might say. :)

And the ones who don’t say it are either fairly ignorant or immensely wealthy...

Never. Tanaka is a guy who operates very well on extra or full rest. Absolutely no way I bring him back on short rest. Not a prayer. He goes game 5 and is in the pen for a game 7. We need another pitcher to step up in a starting role. I am hoping Sevy can build off his start in the clincher vs Minn to keep us in it vs Cole.

Tanaka is a guy that is absolutely nails in bright lights (so far). Almost schilling like. I bring him back for 4 and 7. I hope Boone listens to you and game 7 implodes on yankees.....

It’s supposed to rain Wednesday. That would throw a wrench into things. It would allow the Yanks and Stros to use their game 1 matchups in game 4 on full rest. It would probably hurt the Yanks more than help, though. Yes, we’d get Tanaka and would have him on 3 days rest and Sevy on full rest for Game 7, but losing the off day after what would have been a pen game would lead to a ton of pen fatigue.

Can we take this to the playoff thread?

Back to the Sox, if we trade JD, Betts and JBJ (if not non tendered), now high in the rankings might we jump? We are currently #22 with one ranking.

What if we go farther and trade our 2 years guys- ERod, Workman & Barnes?

We'd be left with Bogey, Devers, Vaz, Sale, Price, Eovaldi & DHern as the remaining core.

All that would be great for the farm ranking, sure.

I wouldn't think either JDM or JBJ would bring back much in trade, unless we're eating money.

It wouldn't make sense to chip in money on JBJ, since we can just non tender him, but I suppose, if someone were to offer us a very nice prospect, if we did, it might become worth it.

I think we could get something for JD without pitching in much at all, but we likely would have to give a few million.

Betts could bring back a very nice return. ERod, Workman and Barnes, too.

I'm not saying I'm for a total fire sale, but there is some logic to doing it.

With all the money saved, we could look to make a few strategic signings that can either bridge us to the next championship team or be part of it.

The two reliable pitchers on the staff this year were E-Rod and Workman. I don't think Barnes fits the category of reliability and would let him go if we could get something for him.

As far as JBJ, we know what he can do and $11 Mil for him is a luxury we can't afford. JDM's fate is in his hands. If he goes on his own, we may well have a different strategy with Betts, but under no circumstance so I think we should offer Betts, or any other player a 10 year contract. Perhaps Lindor will be available for $30 mil for 8 years, so there may be comparable choices.

Of course, that's a great plan, but to get there (for the Sox), we may need to have a year or two of mediocrity or worse, hence the whole idea of "the cliff."

I do not disagree.

Now things have to be undone but I still think we should maintain as much competitiveness as possible while recovering from the hole that DD put the club into. The Sox may have waited to select a new GM until it became clear how available the Dodgers and/or Minnesota execs will be.

I think Henry will keep the team competitive in 2020, one way or another. It may mean not being able to reset the tax penalty until next year.

notin, I have said over and over, I'm not disputing that part. All I have been saying is that the contract, taken on its own, was a favorable one.

My point is that one should never pay that much for a relief pitcher.

It is sad to think we're in a 'rebuild' mode with starting pitchers with at least 3 more years of team control with Price, Sale and Eovaldi along with 2 more years of E. Rod. It looks more like another playoff run(s).

I know Kimmi agrees.

We will be contenders in 2020. Book it.

Same thing

While I do think the playoffs are a crap shoot in some respects, I still think being a top 3-4 contender greatly improves your odds of winning it all.

Plus, is a playoff contender one who finishes 5-7 games behind the last WC slot but was withing 3-5 games behind with 3 weeks to go?

Posted
Should I book that with your back to back to back to back prediction for the ALE this year?

Oh please. You had the Yankees winning the division last year and winning the alds last year. So after 4 years kimmi was finally wrong and you gloat. Sad!

but what about the cliff boss - the cliff? lol

the cliff is real tho? JH literally just proved it by mandating that we are to reset the LT in 2020. Werner tried to walk it back saying it wasn't set in stone but they still want to sell 2020 season tix. the cliff has just happened. the thing is, if we do it right the cliff can literally be only for 1 year. but they need a GM with all the right moves to make that happen. i am available for the right price....

Absolutely.

Especially since the Nationals are now one game away from the World Series but were 10 games behind the Braves on September 16, and in the thick of a 3 team WC race the whole time ...

This year after games of May 23 the Red Sox were 27-23 (.540) while the Washington Nationals were 19-31 (.380).

The remainder of the season the Red Sox were 57-55 (.509) while the Nationals were 74-38 (.661).

He also might be happy for them. He does have friends on that team. And despite his reputation, I've seen a lot more instances from Harper that indicate he just immensely enjoys the game and is having a ton of fun out there. I think he is a lot of fun to watch. While he certainly has an ego, so does every player in MLB. Don't kid yourself. Do you really think Mookie is humble? But for some reason, fans seem to think Harper's ego is his defining quality, despite his being labeled with greatness and getting covered by SI by age 15 while still in high school. Think about that. Before he could legally drive a car, a major sports publication was assessing his major league skills in a massively positive light. That would give any player a phenomenal ego...

oh no doubt they all have egos. we all have players we "hate on" for no reason at all. for instances i hate lebron james. why? who knows. but i love that he didnt even make the playoffs last year. as for harper, i love the fact that just 1 season after he left for the big buck$ his former team not only won their very first playoff series but are now almost guar-un-teed to make the World Series. he could be the nicest guy in the world. he could love playing baseball more then anyone on the planet. i am still getting joy out of the fact that the first season he is gone from the team they make the world series.
