As early as spring training, many here were down on Devers. You just need to let the kids play. Chavis will be a solid major league player. You'll probably disagree. I also think Marco is a very serviceable 2B (obviously he has to stay healthy). He's the best option as long as we're paying Pedey.

Pitching, pitching, pitching....why hast thou forsaken me?

Guilty as charged...

In ST, I called a .300-30-100 season for Devers. I was entirely pulling it out of my ass, but seeing what he did to Chapman showed me this kid has the goods. 103mph from a lefty and he goes over death valley and into the pen. That doesn't happen. He's a true hitter and one who I am going to see for 4 more years at least in Fenway terrorizing my team.

Who are the GM prospects to replace DD? Maybe we should advertise for an energetic youngish baseball man with business savy who is willing to start the rebuilding project and restock the farm system while maintaining enough competitiveness to keep the Fenway faithful in the seats.

Some key attributes would be:

1. Willingness to let go of older players who don't fit the narrative for resurregence in 2021.

2. Not sentimentally attached to certain players. (ala Pedey)

3. Unwillingness to give out excessively long contracts or to pay players more than their performance warrants.

4. Setting reasonable expectations for the manager and coaches while defining consequences.

Probably the earliest such a person could be found and brought on board would be Nov. or Dec., which doesn't give a lot of time to rebuild for 2020. Negotiations with Betts and for arb raises need to be in the new guys hands as early as possible.

My guess is you will find someone from the TB front office. They pump out GM candidates capable of building from within and have nearly no allegiance to the players on the field at the time of takeover

When we signed Dan Duquette, I thought the same thing. If this guy was able to build winners with the Expos, despite having a small budget, what would he do with the Sox?

He did end up building the foundation for Theo, but I expected better.

Cardinals too, and now Astros I would look at. You also have to look at Dodgers and their staff too. Dodgers are the best at both International and Local at finding good Prospects.

Mozeliak sent the Astros their GM, I am wondering if that was the guy to get. I think he might be better. I would really look at the Astros.

Wonder if that was the reason the Cards Bugged the Astros, knowing how good Luhnow is.

What you want to do is hire the Scouts from Tampa, they are the backbone to teams. And Pay them.

Me I would be stealing Scouts from the Yanks, Dodgers, Rays, Astros, and crazy as this sounds the Tigers. They have built a strong Minor League system especially in Pitching since Dombrowski left.

That's going to be a tough thing for this front office to do. Because it will send an up-front message to the fans that the 2020 Red Sox are probably not a playoff contender.

From a PR perspective, a much more palatable decision would be to keep Mookie and only trade him at the deadline if we're out of it.

Trading him at the trade deadline next year might be the best course of action for you guys, the financial liability for the "buying" team will be minimal and the return could be higher and as soon as he reaches FA you can bid for him, it's basically two months without him.

The downside of this approach is the luxury tax reset won't happen, but you might have something in the farm (from the trade) to make up for it

The same way some people wanted to trade Benintendi a few weeks ago for peanuts, young guys need time, some become all-stars out of the gate, some need some seasoning.

I disagree with you on Chavis, he might not have the talent to stick around for long, even in that case, you stick with him he might surprise a lot of people, including me.

Devers and Benintendi are the real deal, by the way, it's unfair to place sky high expectations on them, the league will adjust and they will hit some rough patches, but it's not a good reason to give up on them.

The good thing about Chavis is you can stick him anywhere. He’s not elite (or even good) defensively at any position, but he is adequate everywhere. At one point, the Sox talked about trying him in LF. That might actually have to happen...

I wouldn't give up on him. He is an inexpensive, versatile player with power. He does need to cutdown the strikeout rate and learn to hit the high FB, but there is a chance he can make good progress next season.

Some poster suggested we trade Beni. Nobody said for "peanuts" or suggested a trade that looked like peanuts.

Maybe matt Arnold of the Brewers. Young, good people skills, knows player development and contract negotiations.
