If anyone didn't catch it last night, Porcello smashed 2 tv sets with his hands on his way out. Can't say the guy isn't passionate. Really hope he breaks out of this slump sooner rather than later.

He's lucky he didn't injure himself - assuming he didn't.

I wouldn't care.

Well, I think everyone does stupid things. It's often just a matter of luck how big a price you pay for it.

It would matter to me if Rick Porcello did a Kevin Brown/Carson Smith, yes.

I don't see much difference between the 2019 Porcello and Brian Johnson.

Porcello is gone after this year, so we're talking maybe 9-10 more starts.

Back to the thread topic. I love John Henry's earlier statement that he ain't spending much more this year because it's already the highest payroll in MLB. In other words, it's time for the players to step up and show they are worth all that money.

And I think it's really all about those three starters--Sale, Price, and Porcello. They are the ones underperforming, especially with regard to their immense salaries, and now they are out in the open. That's is, DD and JH refuse to pay a king's ransom or trade away excellent players/prospects to build a world-class bullpen to cover for the inability of our starters to do their jobs.

I love it.

I don't think Henry's statements are going to mean squat to these 3 pitchers.

I wonder how many innings Wakefield could give us?/ Or Pedro! God, how lucky we were! Edited by bosoxmal

In hindsight, signing Morton instead of Eovaldi would have probably put us in the top WC slot. Hard to chose him last winter.

Just about every other reasonable signing, except Ottavino look like busts.

We need to stop looking at free agents as the only way to solve out issues, and as we start having more and more holes to fill and less and less budget space, we will be in a "can't make any mistake signings" situation.

Our rotation will have to straighten itself out. I still have some hope, but it is diminishing with every Sale, Price & Porcello start.

I'm still convinced that you need top of the line starting pitching. On paper, we had it at beginning of the year. They are just not performing. Then get above average players at each position. Moreland/Sam Travis combo doesn't do it for me. I'd rather have Holt/Chavis at 1B and Marco at 2B.

Sale will work his ass off in the off season to try and get back to his old self or close to. We have seen him have some very good games this season, so he can do it.... He just needs better command now that he doesn't have his super fast ball to rely on. Price is what he is..... He seems to be getting worse with age actually. His 3.00 and under ERA seasons are long past. Porcello.... is likely gone. At one point I didn't think we would get any better at a 5th spot in the rotation but his ERA is close to 6.... That is ugly and I think I would take my chances with just about anyone else.

Red Sox have some albatross contract on pitchers that have very well already expended their best years and their remainder doesn't look very promising. If the front office has any brains Porcello will be non tendered.

Porcello is doing one of the worst salary-push performances in MLB history. Sale is on an Island of Lost and Price really doesn't belong as part of this list.

As we often hear at victory celebrations; " Red Sox fans are the greatest fans on earth ." Well , at least as long as you are meeting or exceeding their expectations.

Sox fans are far from the greatest fans, but certainly the most critical, more so than any other franchise's fans. Yankees fans are not even as critical.

Even in the likely event Rick Porcello does not return, the Red Sox will owe Chris Sale and David Price a combined $62 million in 2020.

This website lists Sale with a surplus value of $17.2 million and Price with a negative value of $44.8 million:

To be fair, winning a World Series and then a year later being in the bottom 10 for pitching is pretty disturbing.... Definitely deserves criticizing no matter what team and fanbase it is.

I never liked either Moreland signing. Decent 1Bmen, especially of the platoon variety, are a dime a dozen. We jumped the gun to overpay twice for his fragility. Pearce was overpaid, too.

In fairness to DD, I seriously doubt any Sox fan would have been fine with the idea of having Chavis and Marco as our Right side infield starters on opening day.

In looking at 2020, with an eye towards cutting the taxes we pay, I'm fine with starting out with Chavis, Marco, Dalbec, Travis, Lin and Chatham as our 1B/2B options. If we end up being competitive and need help at 1B or 2B, we can make a deal in July.

Frankly all anyone cares about any more is the AAV. Sale's is $25.6 million because of deferred money in his contract.

I honestly am just frustrated with Price and his inability to go more than 5 innings in a baseball game now. I can't remember the last time he has gone 7 plus, and a quick search shows me he has only gone 6 innings 4 times in his last 10 starts. That is beyond pathetic..... He has also given up 23 runs in his last 36 innings. He started the season well, but he is dropping at an alarming rate.

To be fair, he has 11 of his 20 starts that he did go at least 6 innings (18 outs), but only 2 of 6 in July.

The team is a disappointing 9-11 overall when he starts, but 6 of those losses were 1-run games, so really the Pen hasn't helped him.

Are you sure it was all PEN? Sounds to me like our offense didn't contribute. You know the position players....Mookie making $20M by himself, more than half of pen payroll.
