The game has changed . You can get by with your starters only going five or six . But you need a strong and deep bullpen. In the end , it is all one pitching staff . Would you say that our infield is producing, but our outfield is not ? What good does that do ? You win or lose as a team . Edited by dgalehouse

And if the starters are sucking the bullpen doesn't matter much. Last 3 games Sale, Price & Porcello gave us little chance.

Are you sure it was all PEN? Sounds to me like our offense didn't contribute. You know the position players....Mookie making $20M by himself, more than half of pen payroll.

You make a really good point, only 33 runs were scored (3 per game) in the 11 losses that Price started. So correct, the offense did not help him and the pen wasn't as bad during those Ls.

But this is also why I don't think Price belongs being lumped in with the woes of Porcello and Sale. Price has not gone distance enough, but his performance has been mostly good enough to win.

Price and Sale have been about the same, really. Our expectations of Sale are higher. Both have been considerably better than Porcello.

price's woes coincided with his latest Eck beef.

coincidence? or not.

Price is enigmatic. Who would have thought he would step up the way he did last postseason?

This!

As I mentioned before..... Price's last 10 starts have been 6 or lower. Actually only 4 games out of his last 10 has he gone 6 innings. Otherwise it's 5 or less and he has given up 23 runs in his last 6 starts. That doesn't give the offense, defense, bullpen or coaches a chance. This starting rotation is total s***. Sale and Porcello aren't any better either. E-Rod has been good lately, that's it. Cashner was decent his last start too.

With two months to play , the Sox have now lost 50 games . Last year we lost 54 for the year . Regardless of what old Pythagaras thinks , each game is a separate contest. You simply have to score more runs than the opponent. Whether it is through offense , pitching or defense doesn't matter . The Sox have not been doing that often enough this year . Will that change in the final two months ? We can only hope .

IMO, the pitching has been crap all year long. The everyday players finally pulled their heads out of their asses with Mookie and JD actually thinking about baseball instead of in one case, how tough it is to get by on $20M per and the weight of all that hardware from last year and in the other case worrying about his option clause. Beni is Beni (a good but not great player and JBJ is exactly what his numbers say he is, not more and not less). Put a consistently performing Mookie and JD around Rafi and X and what have you got....An offensive MONSTER, thats what. Yes they clawed themselves back to the top of the league in offensive production. When did that happen? Did it happen from day 1? NOPE.

But now, guess what, the everyday players that have been defocused most of the year have the next in a series of reasons to simply be defocused. Now, it will be "waaaaahhhhhh, Management does not believe in us, waaaahhhhhh. They stuck us with this terrible pitching and did not really do anything to fix it waaaaaahhhhhhhh".

This stacked up as a waaaaaahhhhhh Sox year right from day one and the team itself has done NOTHING to prove otherwise. Remember, no matter who has owned this team from Tom Yawkey forward they have always been the 25 players, 25 Limos Red Sox. Welcome to life as a Red Sox fan. At least we now have Championships to show for the tire tracks over our backs.

The only dif is the rest of the MLB players and teams are getting to be more like the Sox have been since Yawkey. We should be sending out crisis counselors in an effort to prepare MLB fans around baseball for what this is like. WE SHOULD KNOW EXACTLY what this is like.

I am not disappointed that they did not go sell crazy at the deadline. I do wish they had tried to sell off some of the crap that they CANNOT keep for 2020 because they are going absolutely NOWHERE in 2019. Keep the core of the team together. Hope Sale and Price work through the process of transition successfully. Take a deep breath and reinvest in their effort for 2020 and they could be back on top again that fast.

DD made me nearly throw up lunch when I saw his nonsense. "You would not believe the number of calls we got on our bullpen pieces." Yea Dave because nobody could believe you WERE NOT SELLING!

Well said Jung. At the end of the day, this is simply not the same team from last year.... Not even close. The pitching stinks to high heaven, the offense (granted we are number 1 in the league) only scores runs in chunks. It seems the offense goes absolutely nuts for one series like they did against the Yankees, but then goes relatively quiet the next series.... And don't get me wrong I am not saying this is the on the offense because it's not. If we didn't have the bats that we do we wouldn't even be close to a playoff spot right now.

At the end of the day the pitching just isn't good enough. O'Brien summed it up nicely yesterday when he said "This bullpen wasn't meant to save us if the starting rotation wasn't good" And that is so very true. We are paying a lot of money to Sale, Price and Porcello. They should be going at least 6 innings every game and a lot of the time 7 innings. Price I think has only gone over 6 innings like once or twice this year (maybe it's more, don't care to look) Sale and Porcello are no better. Asking this bullpen to go 3 innings or a lot of the time 4 innings every game is asking a hell of a lot from these guys. It all starts with our starting rotation..... And they have not been good and that is why we are not currently in a playoff spot right now. When this rotation starts consistently going 6/7 innings and giving up 3 runs or less we will win a hell of a lot more games. Until then, if things don't change we are simply not a very good team.

You would not be interested in Barnes if you had a team that would not overwork him? You would not be interested in Work if you had a team that would not overwork him? You would not be interested in DH if you had a coaching staff that could help bring him along? The rest of them are trash and Nate is waaaaaay too iffy at this point. But I can easily see teams having interest in one of those three guys.

The spin job DD was trying to perform was that our pen is sooooooooo good that of course teams were interested in it.

I suspect that teams just plain made a call thinking it likely DD would be interested in moving somebody. Of course DD is not going to say that. My preference would have been that he not say anything in the topic.
