I'd still like to see us trade for a solid set-up man, as long as we don't have to give up a top prospect- something like the Cashner deal. Keep us under the max tax line.

Closer: Eovaldi

8-9th inning RP'er: _______

8-9th inning RP'er: Workman

7-8th inning RP'er: Barnes (if he regains himself)

7-8th inning RP'er: Taylor

6-7th inning RP'er: Brewer

6-7th inning RP'er: Hembree (assuming velocity returns)

5-6-7 inning RP'er: Walden or Wright/Johnson/Velazquez

You're missing Hernandez...I think he'll be in the mix. Too much talent. Now that he's pitching strictly from stretch, his control seems better.

September.

Wright & Johnson are out of options.

Walden & Velazquez may be better options.

Yes, he could be in the mix.

I love what Eovaldi did to help the Sox win the 2018 championship. But Nate is not going to be the bullpen savior.

It's hard to know. He's got all the skills and attitude to be a great closer, but you never really know until you try it.

What if he fails? Do we move him back to the rotation in August?

He won't be a savior but he can certainly upgrade it.

He won't be a savior byut he can certainly upgrade it.

I think there's a decent chance he will be great in this role or as an Andrew Miller type role,

As long as he is in that triple digit range his location rust won’t be a factor.

If he is middle 90’s the BP thread on TalkSox will continue to thrive

Tanner Houck is also making some noise.

He should help, mostly because he's a much needed fresh arm. I think he can be very good in this role. I think it's a mistake to make him a closer over a starter, but I understand why they're doing it.

Eovaldi as closer is the absolute best thing the Sox can do to give them a real shot at winning it . I am 100 % good with this .

Agreed! We have guys in the bullpen that are pretty solid outside of the 9th inning. If Eovaldi can close games out I honestly think we have some solid pitching. Very curious to see how rusty Eovaldi will be. He's been off for quite a while, coming back to a closing role is a lot of stress.... hopefully he is up for the challenge.

Exactly. He could be fantastic. There's a good chance he will be. Maybe not 50%+ but a good chance.

I do think the odds are better than 50-50 he'll be good to great. It's probably 3:1 he'll be better than what we've had, so far.

Exactly. It's good to speculate and spit stats and talk about the "what ifs, and what could" But he is in the bullpen this weekend so we will have our answers soon.

The more I think about this move , the more I like it . It will be better for the bullpen, better for the team , better for the manager and better for Eovaldi . If you called central casting for a closer ; they would send over Eovaldi . This will work out great .

Sarcasm or major policy shift?

Huh ? Why is it a policy shift ? I have been in favor of this since it first was mentioned.

I must be confusing you with someone else. Maybe it was the "more I think about it" comment that through me off.

Sorry.

Okay . No problem. I am definitely 100% on board with Nate closing .

This is could very well be a disaster and I’m gonna grab my popcorn for it!

You don’t need to get off on the Red Sox. There’s porn for that just saying.

There will need to be some patience as Nate gets into this closer role. Control was never his strongest suit, so he may walk or HBP someone in a key situation. But with a one inning role , he can go out confidently and bring his heater for 20 pitches and let it fly, making a curve/slider and change up very effective. His 8 innings vs the Dodgers in the WS shows you may get 2+ innings from him to get the win. No one else in the pen brings that endurance to the table, although Workman did get more than an inning in this week.

I'd give Eovaldi 4 appearances before deciding if he is the answer to closing games strongly. Hope he gets the opportunities to show his stuff before the deadline.

We lived through Kimbrel's nail-biting outings.

We'll be fine.
